Virgin Media Broadband woes - please can you assist...

Since approx 20th August when the internet connections in my area were "upgraded" from 4MB to 10MB - i've had extremely poor speeds at all times except the wee hours.
After writing to and calling VM - they admit its their fault - poor cable quality in my area and because not enough people have complained and because it will be expensive to correct the problem - they will not prioritise it.

Question - for those of you on the 10MB package - how are your speeds?

I get nowhere near 10,000kpbs (around 5%-10% of it) until the wee hours..

I don't know if its the whole of porty.. my postcode... my street that is affected - but please let me know if you are suffering the same issues!

Im not sure what speed broadband im subscribed to but I do know that Sky 1 and varous other basic sky channels are going to be available via virgin media cable tv from the 13th of this month. Which personally I find rather jolly.

That speed test thing showed me as having a download speed of 9846 kbps and an upload speed of 491 kbps. Im round near the postal sorting office.

Think the get out clause is the use of the phrase 'up to', Portyconvert. I'm meant to be on the 20MB connection, but my speed test showed about 6MB!

Yea you are right in that you won't always hit max speeds - but you shouldn't be as low as 6MB - in fact what would the point in you paying for a 20MB connection if you were only hitting speeds that came under the price of the 10MB.... I wonder if you are in the same area as me? - i'm down beside the big Funpark beside the pottery kilns.

Im going to do that speed test thing a couple of times each evening this week and see what its like, its good tonight when I done it but it might not always be as good.

I'm on Brighton Place. Can't say my connection feels slow Portyconvert. And as MT says, it will fluctuate according to the time of day. For example, I'm now getting close to 10MB, so a few folk must be in their beds

Ok so VIP should be 20MB and assuming you've got your up and down the wrong way around (upload should never be higher than download!!). That means that you are getting 25% of the max speed - so again if its not letting you get above 10MB... why are they charging you for 20MB!!

I suppose its what you use if for - most of the time surfing is ok for me - but i can forget it for streaming video / large file download / online gaming. I was very happy when I had the 4MB connection as it always was at that level - now since my "upgrade" - its rubbish!!

Ive just done it again tonight a few minutes ago and it shows me as 9841 kbps download and 491 kbps upload, so im still okay at the min.

Would the speed on my laptop be affected by whatever anyone else in the house is doing?

The boys manage to game online and download loads of stuff on their laptops
