Closure of the Links Project

Post by savethelinksproject » 12 Jul 2008, 00:29

Some of you may have read recently in the Edinburgh Evening News about the probable closure of the Links Project, based in Leith, Edinburgh, due to a cut in funding by the City Council. The Links Project is a residential detox and rehab centre for people with addiction issues, and provides a much needed service to people throughout the Lothians, in fact it is the only place of its kind in the Lothians, and one of only a few in Scotland.

Basically I am posting here to try and raise awareness of the plight of the Links Project - they do an awesome job - and with a waiting list of over 400 people still needing their help it seems ridiculous the council will not provide funding for this much needed service, which will close well before the end of the year if nothing is done.

The closure would not only affect the clients, but also the clients families, the clients children, husbands, wives and so on. Many people are given hope and support through the Links Project work. It can not be denied that Edinburgh and the Lothians has it's share of addicts, and there are very few places for these peole to go for help, as is reflected by the volume of people on the waiting list for the Links Project. Allowing the Links Project to close will have a knock on effect to the community as a whole.

So, basically we are trying to get a bit of support behind the Links Project, we may be fighting a losing battle, but we are determined to not let them go down without a fight. If you are on Facebook, and would like to show your support please join our group 'Save The Links Project', if you have links with the media, please give us a bit of publicity and make the community aware of what is happening, even just telling friends and family about the Links Project and raising a little awareness would be fantastic.

I know this is a Portobello forum, but Leith is just down the road and I think this is an issue that will have a knock on effect not just throughout Edinburgh, but the Lothians as a whole so that's why I am posting this here.

Thank you for your time.
