JPEG help required!

For some reason I can no longer get the jpeg files on my dad's pc to open properly - all that happens is that Word appears with lots of letters and symbols. I've tried reloading Works for Windows to no avail.

Any advice, please???

Might not be the simplest way - but what you could try is:
a) Open Windows explorer (found in Start>Programs>Accessories)
b) Go to the Tools menu and select Folder Options
c) click on the File Types tab
d) Scroll down to find jpg and click on change and select a suitable program to open with (eg. Paint)

Hope this works

Can always open a web browser (explorer, firefox etc.) and then drag and drop the jpeg into the browser window, it should open the file for you.

Thanks, Grunk - can I then save them as a jpeg or is that part of what PortyC was suggesting?

The problem is that my father is 87 and forgetful and also not great at learning new things............... I have all his stuff backed up and managed to save them as tiffs on my pc so he can open them that way, but it's not wonderful. Mind you, he's never said anything about the problem!

I would do what PortyC was suggesting and use the appropriate program, microsoft photo editor or adobe if you have it? otherwise paint or one of the browsers.

If you need to convert from TIF files then you might be able to do this directly in photo editor, or photoshop (use save as) I don't have any tif files so I can't check this for you.

Otherwise have a google for TIF to JPEG converters there's a few free ones around that should do it.

I'm so embarrassed

I should have tried this on my own pc before going to my dad's then maybe I'd have eventually [i.e. 2 minutes ago!] realised that PortyC had written Windows explorer .............

Will try again next Friday!

Just in case you didn't know, windows explorer is the application that lets you view folders and files graphically.

So when you double click on a folder (or my computer or whatever) the window that opens is a 'windows explorer' window.

Thanks, Grunk, for being so tactful and for a clear explanation [not easy when it comes to computers] - I didn't know (as you can tell by my actions!), but I do now!!

How would you be expected to know unless someone had told you already?

It's only fools who would judge people for not knowing as much as them on a particular subject.

I didn't stay long at my dad's yesterday as another family member was due to visit [which meant I could get away with a short visit with a clear conscience!], I but will definitely try next Saturday!
