I've had a mobile phone now for 11 years. I got it after a particularly scary drive back from my work in Livingston one evening, when it was pelting down with snow and road conditions were so bad that the motorway had closed and all public transport was cancelled. My son, who was in the car with me at the time, was only months old and I felt very isolated. However, having got the phone, I rarely use it. Even after 11 years I don't know my own number

and because I keep it turned off at work frequently forget to turn it back on or charge it up. Just ask anyone who has tried to contact me on it
The major benefit of this is that it costs me peanuts. I have an annual contract, which the phone company long ago ceased to offer their new customers, but they are, apparently, legally obliged to renew for exisiting customers. It usually costs me £119 a year and that covers all my normal usage. I also get free upgrades to my phone. This year they asked if I wanted a new phone or the cash instead. My phone works fine, so I asked for the cash. They took £75 off my bill! Reckon pretty soon they'll be paying me to have the phone
