History is Suspended

Post by rathbone » 21 Dec 2007, 09:10

Unfortunately my computer died yesterday afternoon (a series of kernel panics and then a black screen. After that na-dah)

So it's off to the computer doctor later today, but, given that it's Christmas, I expect it to be out of action for a couple of weeks

Assuming that I can recover the Marine Gardens data from the old hard drive, all will be straightforward. If not, then I will have to trawl through the Scotsman archives again. Either way, it will take a wee while. - so those of you who are keen speedway fans will have to curb your enthusiasm.

Meanwhile, I will be popping into the local cyber-cafe (like now) to keep an eye on you all.
I have nothing to say and I'm going to say it.

My sympathies. My laptop crashed irretrievably just before I managed to finish copying everything over to the mac. I lost thousands of emails and all my contact folders. I guess someone may have been able to rescue the data for a sum of money but I decided it was maybe time for a clean start so I have re-formatted and clean-installed XP.

I have also lost a lot of files, including historical research, that are corrupt and unreadable. I'm afraid I have never been very good at backups and keeping hard copies. I'm using Time Machine now with an external hard drive.

Oh no! Bad luck. I was hoping you'd be bringing the work out as a book for xmas btw, I had already decided who to buy it for :D

Fortunately the Doctor was able to retrieve the Marine Gardens data, so that will return once I've got a computer to post it from.

Biggest casualty of the crash, however, is the web-site which I managed (Bimbo Plenderleith Online) which has been completely corrupted and will have to be rebuilt from scratch.

......... you can tell it's Christmas

History will be suspended again for a couple of weeks............ I'm off to Kenya again tomorrow on aid work.

I intend to make a start on the next local history project when I get back. At the moment I'm toying with "Porty At War", but I'm open to suggestions. :)

I think that would make a great topic. I'm sure there will be lots of material but at least it is restricted to a range of years.

When it is completed, do you intend to produce the Marine Gardens project as a pdf with illustrations, as you did with Portobello Showmen?

Happy holidays!

Reckon 'Porty at War' would be very popular Rathbone. The local primaries focus on WW2 , as part of the p7 curriculum, so you could find yourself in demand as a resource!

Have a productive time in Kenya and make sure you take some more photos for us.

Will do.

Sitting at the moment in a cyber cafe in Nairobi in shirt sleeves ..... it was raining and just above freezing when I left and it's in the eighties at the moment.

Now back from heat and dust to wind and wet :?

History will start again after I've posted the following photies for Marya.

Given that I was working with displaced people in refugee camps, this time it is not a series of sweeping landscapes and cuddly animals.

Everyone had to move around in convoys with army escorts. If they ran out of petrol, or had a flat tyre, they were left behind. Most of the people were completely traumatized and had horrific tales to tell, like Jackline who had been caught up in the trouble in Eldoret, only to see her six year old son disappear into the crowd. Six weeks later she still doesn't know what became of him.

Thankfully, things have calmed down a bit, but it will be a long long time before people come to terms with what happened to them.

Thanks, Rathbone. It sounds a pretty emotionally demanding experience. Bravo to you for not simply heading off to the golf course in your retirement. I totally admire folk like yourself who undertake such feats.
