Portobello Road / HLR Roundabout

Post by wangi » 14 Aug 2007, 18:29

Any idea why this was closed off? Has only just recently re-opened and traffic on Portobello Road is backed up to Meadowbank (probably past there)... Four or five police / traffic wardens directing traffic on the roundabout.

A sign of how bad the traffic's going to be once this roundabout gets the roadworks started on it!

We had a client that was late for his meetting with us. He said that a big bit of plant machinery fell off its lorry.

I came past at the back of 4 wangi and there were Police directing the traffic then on the roundabout. The lane leading from Porty High Street onto the roundabout was closed off and seemed to be covered with sand. There was also a flatbed lorry with something which looked like a portable generator on the back, a crane and a number of Police officers in Baileyfield Road. Don't know if the two were related. :?

Baby Dragon and I noticed the High St shut from Brighton Place about 3ish, police stopping traffic at the junction there. They'd turned off the lights but were letting buses through
When we got in Clanger 1 said she's come round the roundabout at Kings Road on the bus and it was said a lorry had shed a load
Mr Soupy just home from WGH , heard Seafield rd gridlocked so went by Jocks Lodge, more chaos , got home nearly an hour late ( and grumpy)

Not been the best of fortnights at the Kings Road roundabout - saw a vehicle which had demolished most of the island at the First & Last a couple of Sundays ago as it left the roundabout

It's probably all part of a plan... The roundabout will be demolished by the time they want to put up the traffic lights!

Anyone know when they plan to start the roadworks - is it once the Duddingston Park ones are finished?

Not sure, but it will be when they can cause theheight of chaos.
When will the most roads be closed for the trams?

Leith Walk is already one lane only in a few stretches. Shows how daft the tram layout is for the Walk - a dedicated tram lane (middle of road) and the remaining single lane shared between cars, buses, bikes, ... A cyclist going up toward town will really hold things up, or will be in a really dangerous position...

Hmmm and I wonder why they got rid of the trams in the 1st place?
Frrom cyclists getting caught in the lines, narrowing of roads, congestion it'll create, pedestrians tripping on the lines - I'm against it

I actually surprised myself and bothered to write a letter to the Scotsman earlier this year about it all...

Trolleybuses are what we need!

I think they hope to leave a short break before starting at Kings Road..but it will also no doubt depend on contracts/budgets/weather/etc.

Skate boards will be quicker!

I think when the trams still ran there were problems with the Leith system being diffrent from Edinburgh ones. Was there not an exchange half way down the Walk
Beeching did what he was asked and highlighted the railways to be dismantled. pity they did. Then we're imagining a raillink into Waverley now.

BUT
unless we can provide cheap efficient transport within the city people will still use their cars
Mr Soupy can use buses to get to work, it will take him an hour longer than by car and wont run at times to suit him
He could cycle, dirty and dangerous sometimes but from Lindsay Road theres a track to Crewe Toll, but then if we store his bike in the stair it's liable to be vandalised, bits nicked or subject to neighbours hate ( not ours but freind has got big hassle for daring to chain a bike up in her stair )
Clanger 1 could use buses to get to Eskbank but in that time i can drive Baby Dragon to Leith Academy, Clanger 4 to Holy Rood, and her to Jewel and Esk College ( then onto my mums, another story )

We were stuck in the queue for ages around 3.30ish trying to get back down to Porty. No sign of what the problem was then apart from police everywhere. Tonight, just been up that way and the road is so slippy with oil that my wheels span trying to move off from Porty High Street onto roundabout, it was like driving on ice. Be careful up there cyclists and motor cyclists!

I read that we were going to be given a 'wee break' after suffering the MIlton and Duddingston roadworks and that King's Road will not start until January 08. 8)

My mother in law got on the bus at Morrison's at 3.45. She made it to Moira Terrace at 4.45! The driver was less than helpful and wasn't letting people off between stops  . It was all cleared by 6.50 though.
Enough of your nonsense - get back to the Play Pen!
