get well soon Oscar

Post by Dadaist » 23 May 2007, 14:44

the original bad boy of the Durhams has broken his leg

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/surrealist303/495204677/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/204/4952 ... ee32_m.jpg" width="240" height="180" alt="CIMG2277"></a>

for now, the other cats in the hood will be able to relax, the local mice may experience a temporary growth in population, and bird life won't be quite as tense

he came home today on 3 legs, front right paw completely off the ground and hanging limp :( the bones are broken and it's swollen

nice vet people think it's feline versus automobile

/phones Tesco pet insurance for claims form

he will be in overnight, x-ray this aftie

please post any messages of goodwill here and I will make sure he gets them

Aw, poor wee hunter! I hope he's ok, and will be a peaceful patient. Maybe he'll be bravely willing to make to with rubber chickens, plastic mice and wooden birdies for the duration of his recouperation :D

He had a few raggy nails which the vet says point towards it being a car accident. She knew he was scrappy though and turned up a (relatively old) wound whilst examining him.

He was completely unbothered by the whole thing.

He has had his wee x-rays.

Oof. Proper fracture of both bones plus some shards about to make the vets lives more interesting

radius and ulna both broken, bones over-ridden which was why he wasn't in much pain cos the bones weren't rubbing against each other

there was also blood in his urine - he has definitely taken a knock and when you add in the scraped nails it's almost certainly a car that has hit him

chappy is now on antibiotics and painkillers and will be getting a plate put in tomorrow, there might be bits of metal sticking out too

/bit upset

Oscar has a bit of previous.

When we got him, it was as a rescue cat - he was presented to Balerno SSPCA after having been hit by a car - so this is his second ding.

He will persist with this adrenaline lifestyle. Chester was more pipe 'n' slippers but this one is a bit of a wild child.

Any point in Selma coming round with Whiskas and catnip to cheer him up or will I just get her to send some raunchy photos?

Another cat on his turf == fight. That's not to say that Selma wouldn't paste him tho.

Whiskas and catnip == oh yes. We like.

When I say bad "boy" it's not strictly true. The pom poms are just for decoration if you get my drift - so the raunchy pics might have done something for him during his Austin Powers days, but the lover in him has retired.

UPDATE

They have had to order a special plate to put in his wee leg. It hadn't arrived today so his op has been put back to tomorrow.

It was like being on the phone to a mechanic.

Yes, good luck Oscar from all at Hatstand Acres. I hope for your sake that your keeper hasn't gone for the cheap insurance option, and you don't end up being mended using the "ice lolly stick and sellotape" method.

Regards,

The Hatstands.

Thanks all. Hatters you might have a good idea about lolly sticks - maybe they should use one with a joke on it like "if you break the other one don't come running to me" or something. Although I think I can stretch to a new as opposed to sooked-on lolly stick, or at least something sterile.

Do you know what the NHS calls a lollypop ?

A lozenge with an integrated oral-mucosal applicator.

UPDATE

He has had his op and is recovering. Two of them did it, and it took a while.

He might be home after the weekend, but they are talking about 4-6 weeks enforced rest.

How you manage that with a young male cat I know not!

Just been to see him. He is going to be in a cage for 6-8 weeks. The radius (weight-bearing bone) is the one with the plate in it.

Because of the way it broke - shards came off - it didn't fit neatly back together, so they're relying on it mending. New bone growth isn't as strong as the original hence the enforced rest to give everything time.

If it doesn't work then it'll either be external fixation (the rod/plate goes on the outside) or - hopefully not - he might lose the leg.

We saw the wee dude in the cattery - looking groggy but still wanting cuddles. I don't think he'll want to be seen in public for this time anyway because it will take that long for the hair to re-grow!

Aw poor wee soul.
Nasty jigsaw for the vets there
Good luck keeping him in a cage

Are you going to go out and whack the mice for him now?
Leave him little pressies of things that fascinate you?

mag - good point

I love the character of Death in the Pratchett books - not only does he have a black and dry sense of humour, but he takes a very dim view of people who are cruel to cats.

I hope it doesn't come to him losing a leg, but we'll just love the wee chap more if that happens.

too true i'd like to break their legs n jaw with golf clubs n leave them in the gutter like marley was , the cat was bought into the home cause the person knew we would do something where as if they had gone to a vet they might have thought of it more in financial terms.

UPDATE

original bad boy Oscar is now home. his leg is almost completely shaved - there's this furry paw on the end of a shaved leg with huge stitches so it looks like a cross between a poodle and Frankenstein.

I will post a picture as long as it's tasteful and he doesn't mind. Just wait till you see his lovely bed.

He's on painkilling drops and 2 types of antibiotic tablet. It's hard enough getting tablets into cats, but trying to hold him without hurting his leg adds even more fun!

He has to take them though :(

"He used to bring me roses
I wish he could again,
but that was on the outside
and things were different then.

On the inside the sun still shines
and the rain falls down,
but the sun and rain are prisoners too
when morning comes around.

Last night I dreamed we were together
sharing all the love we've known,
'til I had to face the nightmare
of waking up alone.

On the inside the roses grow
they don't mind the stony ground,
but the roses here are prisoners too
when morning comes around."
We're one week into Oscar's long stretch. He's on 2 types of antibiotic tablet twice a day which I have to get him to swallow, plus painkilling drops.
