advice - tenement DIY

Post by lor » 18 May 2007, 19:58

hi

i live in a flat in the tenements on straition place, i can't seem to find out if my ceilings will take the weight of a bycycle hoist and a chair hung from the ceiling (a bit 70s I know!). obviously they will need to be attached to the joists but i'm a bit worried i'll bring the ceiling down..... anyone tried anything similar?

thanks
Lor

Hi Lor, I hope Seanie reads this as he was a great source of help to me when I was thinking about putting one of those TV brackets thingies in my dad's house!

Lor, certainly for the bike lift you'll be fine. The hung chair might depend on the weight on it :) But assuming it's spread over a couple of joists then it should be ok too.

It's all in the fittings - good sturdy long screws in the middle of the joists.

You might've come perilously close to a swiss cheese wall.

As to the question wangi's right, the fixings are probably the most important thing. Assuming no woodworm or anything like that a standard joist should take the weight but you'd need to make sure your fixing was dead centre and deep. A big hefty screw-eye that went a couple of inches into the joist (after allowing for the ceiling finish) might do it. But give it a good firm test. At worst the fixing will fail not the ceiling.

ducking the mashed potato

:hello2: lor
I know some of the flats have clothes pullies, not sure of the weight of wet washing vs bike
I also know the plasterwork is probably as old as the building, been a ceiling or two fallen down ( my kitchen/living room a few years ago being one )
having said that if you're going into the joists it shouldn't really affect the plasterwork
Give it a try she said, knowing full well it wont be her floor thats going to fall down
