Nacho Nirvana - Where can it be found?

Post by Scoop » 22 Apr 2007, 21:42

Twice this weekend Epy and I have dined out on sub-standard nachos. We are old and we are tired of traipsing round looking for the perfect plate to share. Can anyone point us in the right direction? :(

I am very much a nacho afficiando.

Top of the list for me for a long time has been the Filmhouse, although I was disappointed to find the portions have been getting smaller of late - probably a good thing for my waistline though! :D

I was in Biblos at the Clerk Street end of Chambers Street last night and was very impressed by their offering, served somewhat unusually in a bowl but very tasty all the same. They came close to the Filmhouse.

Basement is also recommended, as is another place down that way but the name escapes me for now.

The offering from the Traverse Bar is definitely to be avoided - soggy and not done well at all.

Anyone got any Porty nachos experiences? I'm sure I spotted some on the Reds menu the last time I went past.

Is this part of the special dietary training plan for the turd races? :D

I haven't had nachos in ages, in fact I had forgotten about their existence. I really fancy some now. I wonder if any of these places do nachos home deliveries..?

Forgot about Biblos. I can confirm their Nachos are fab. Have to say the Blue Bean do quite a good offering too but worst so far has to be The Standing Order.

I was just going to recommend them!! However, this serves as testament to the inconsistency of the food at the Traverse.

The best Nachos I have had , and they are substantial, is at the Garden restaurant at the Dome, superb.

Forest cafe

The not-for-profit enterprise which used to be on West Port but moved to near Bristo Square (on that wee street with Napier's, Bedlam, that china shop etc)

They spend a pile on the ingredients for their nachos. If you like fresh coriander you're in for a treat.

Big portion, great quality ingredients, nice people.

Viva Mexico in Cockburn St brings back warm Nacho memories, nice plate of Nachos sitting on and hiding a delicious mound of refried beans. :D

Definitely NOT the Crags in Newington. Went there for lunch one day from work, plate of cold tortilla chips with a flash grilled sprinkling of grated cheese, accompanied by a couple of MacDonalds-like plastic tubs of vaguely spicy tomato sauce and some kind of garlic-and-herb "dip". :pukeright:

I think Talkporty has to hit the Nacho trail. We could make it a monthly thing with weekly weigh ins in between?

Scoop and I are willing to put our quest for the perfect Creme Brulee on hold for this new experiment.

I think you just voted yourself social convenor. I'm all over the nachos.

That's not to say that curry isn't good, or Chinese, or sausage & mash.

I would certainly be interested in attending any planned nacho-fest.

Sometimes, in some of these places, you can get a whole jug of booze brought to your table.

I can just pitcher it now.

They are the business.

The great thing about Mexican restaurants is that you can have bottled beer, and cocktails, and tequila shots, and food with chilli in it.

Billy Connolly is right though - a lot of the food is the same stuff just folded differently.

Not sure what happened to that thread. Due to the spiralling crime wave, civil disobedience, complete state of lawlessness etc I've decided its time to give Porty a wide berth.

:D

Nah, the reality is I've finally decided to take the plunge into the property market and cut the paternal strings for the first time since university/travels and move a bit closer to town. I'd love to live in Porty if I wasn't from here and worked here but my new abode is within walking distance of the city centre which will be ideal on lovely summer evenings like tonight :) Leaving Porty at the end of June, but will no doubt be back frequently!
