Lullabyes

Post by mr magnolia » 12 Apr 2007, 13:40

As the youngest magnoliette moves smoothly through her third year on the third rock from the sun, I realised with a little jolt that my lullabye singing days will come to an end in the not-too-distant future.

I'll miss these special little moments of calm and removal from other third-rock cares. I doubt the magnoliettes will miss my singing, but still.

My own favourites, sung as, if not actually meant as, lullabyes, based upon a hazy memory of my childhood and repeated usage over the last years are:

I had a little nut tree

Horsey Horsey

Skye Boat Song

Wee Willie Winkie

Away in a Manger

Coulter's Candy

What are / were your favourites?

And which should I learn, sharpish, before its too late?

"Hush a bye baby on the treetop,
When the wind blows the cradle will rock,
When the bough breaks the cradle will fall,
And down will come baby, cradle and all. "

Cheery stuff! :P

Aww I'm coming over all nostalgic.

Bobby Shafto

Ali Bally

I see the moon

One my nan used to sing was;

Go to sleep my baby close your pretty eyes.
Angels up above you peeping at my dearie from the skies.
Great big moon is shining
stars begin to peep.
It's time for little Piccaninnies to go to sleep.

On baby's knuckle
Or on baby's knee
Where will the baby's dimple be?
Baby's cheek or baby's chin?
Oh but it would be a sin
If it was always covered by a safety pin!
Where will the dimple be?

Or

There's a fly in the sky
Let us watch it you and I
As it crawls up the walls
But it never falls
If you and I had six such legs
You and I could walk on eggs
There he goes
On his toes
Tickling baby's nose
Enough of your nonsense - get back to the Play Pen!

Same here!!

This one's not so much a lullaby, more likely to give the poor wee child nightmares!!!!

Good night, sleep tight.
Don't let the bed bugs bite.
If they do, squeeze them tight;
And don't let go 'till morning light.

I'm sure I used to stay awake at night when I was little just in case they came to get me!!!
Why be scared????

My mum used to sing "All the pretty little horses", an American lullabye with a cheery line about bees and butterflies picking out a lambs eyes.

I heard it recently on an Odetta album, with the same guitar part my mum played. I asked her if she got it from the same record, but she told me that Robin Harper, now the Green MP, has taught it to her.

How about

Nobody loves me

Everybody hates me

I think I'll go and eat worms

Or

Twinkle Twinkle little star

How I wonder what you are

I'm afraid I used to make up my own lullabyes and for some reason the tune I often used was the "itsy bitsy yellow polka dot bikini" one.

I still like to make up my own songs and sing them to the dog now, he's the only one who doesn't complain  eg. "mummy's little baba, one two three, sitting on your mama's knee......................

Oh. My. God!! I was in TG's house today and although certain things I observed did give me cause for concern, I was unaware that she sings songs to that poor wee doggie!!

I always sang Sweet and Low to my eldest, in a rocking chair (learned it for a strange concert an octet I was in sang at some stately home near Doncaster), but the youngest only ever calmed down to Dido's Thank You  .
My father used to sing me Save All Your Kisses For Me.
All I really need is love, but a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt!

Was reminded of this thread this morning.
At the Eskbank roundabout there are sculptures of three craws sitting n a wa'
Now I couldn't remember the verses so googled and there are a few variations.
I now remember my version as one greeting fur its maw
second couldnay flee at a'
third fell an' broke it's jaw
and the fourth wisnae there at a'

Anybody got any others?

I remember that one but the last line I knew was
And they won't come back another night.
