hostage drama

Amid escalating tension, the hostage drama entered a new phase today.

Questions were being asked about whether those who had been kidnapped had said what they are reported to have said, and also whether the kidnapping itself was justified - that is to say whether they were on the right side of the line when it happened.

They are still being held and the war of words continues. There must be a lot of behind the scenes manoevering as spectators try to work out who is right, who is wrong and what will happen next.

Will the kidnapped ever see the light of day? Will the parties come to a deal or will World War 3 break out?

Keep your eyes on your screens.

A mysterious element has been introduced by a photographic onlooker who watched as events unfolded. "Things tale time" he said wisely.

Whilst it is commonsense and reasonable this apparently mystified the victim of the hostage who experienced a kidnap that took place before he could blink.

I had a lovely kebab from an Iranian cafe in Dubai. Sharjah airport reported 41.5 degrees centigrade that week so it was a bit hot outside.

I can't remember if it was a heart or lung kebab but it was the business.

I'm genuinely perplexed because I didn't think it was any worse than the normal things Porty comes up with but maybe I've missed something which has been deleted before I had time to read it?

Nothing has been heard from them.I imagine some of the kidnappers drop by now and again and look over the hostages. I guess they are struggling to justify the kidnap prior to demanding terms for retirn to freedom. I guess we will just have to Waite.

The trouble with hostages is that they are at the whim of their captors, who can tamper with them and make it look like they said one thing when they thought another.

Add in the duplicitous nature of all those with power and you have a nasty cocktail, as behind-doors deals can be struck.

Truth is always the first casualty.

Ideally you need to have transparency and oversight, but this is a grubby real-world conflict where it never works like that. People lie, people call in favours, unlikely partnerships born out of expediency are formed and broken, allegiances shift.

Innocents suffer.

And it's all done in the name of fairness.

Conversely the hostages can be left untampered and treated well, alloed to smoke, write home to their loved ones and so on . However, the rules can be tampered with. Boundaries re-drawn and waters that were once free to travel in become no-go areas, as the laws are changed to suit the scurrilous kidnappers.

Thing is though I'm that cheap that if I was getting Iranian food I'd write anything they wanted. Just keep the kebabs coming lads its fine by me!
