Door to door fish sales

Post by Dadaist » 07 Mar 2007, 19:58

Just had these guys at my door!
A fish merchant has recently been found to be making unsolicited calls on residents in the Portobello area. We are aware from subsequent investigations that this is not an isolated incident and there have been a number of reports across the UK.

The vendors are alleged to have been using high pressure sales techniques and charging inflated prices which have varied from between £8-00 to £12-00 for 400g of fish. Some bills have run to hundreds of pounds for one transaction.

The fish may have use-by dates which have been concealed or even removed, and the species of fish may be incorrect, for example Vietnamese catfish has been sold as monkfish in other parts of the country. It is also strongly suspected that the fish, which is sold as fresh, has been previously frozen and defrosted. Extensive enquiries so far have failed to identify a legitimate documented chain of supply for these products.

Councillor Sheila Gilmore, Executive Member for Community Safety and Housing, has said, "It is despicable that certain people are willing to take advantage of others in this manner, particularly those in vulnerable situations. There are trading standards in place aimed at combatting such reckless behaviour. Anyone who feels they are being taken advantage of should report this to the Council directly."

Anyone who has been or is approached by unknown individuals selling fish on the doorstep should immediately contact Environmental Health Officers in Services for Communities on 0131 529 3030.
Found the article here after they had left and I got suspicious.

It's a young guy with really short hair and an embroidered jacket - JB Fish or something like that.

They are well cagey about the price and want to get you to agree to buy it first.

His colleague is a short, older female with grey hair.

The price they quoted me when I finally got them to admit it was for a small freezer pack - 30 tiny trays of fish @ £6 a tray == £180!!!!

If you just say no, they do go - but they are high pressure as it says.

So glad I didn't buy anything!

I seem to remember a thread along the lines of " fishy tails" where some porty resident was pressured into buying dubious fish over the phone.
Could it be the same guys?
Think I'll "just say no "

Environmental Health are after these people, not to mention the trading standards folk in Newcastle.

If you see two people trying to sell fish out of a van in the way described above (the van isn't even refrigerated!) *please* phone 200 2000 and get hold of Environmental Health.

Not only are they trying to rip folk off for hundreds of pounds for enormous amounts of fish, it hasn't been stored properly and could be tainted.

Spoke to environmental health this morning.

Same scam - slightly different people from before.

There's a "Mr Big" somewhere in Newcastle who is lending these stupid people the money to buy the vans at extortionate rates - they pay off the debt by selling the fish at many times the market value.

The van isn't refrigerated, and they've come up the A1 and spent all day driving around certain areas.

An hors d'oeuvre of being ripped off for hundreds followed by a plat du jour of tainted fish.

We had someone very similar in our street a couple of weeks ago. Luckily I was already cooking dinner as I might have been tempted at the thought of some nice fresh(as I thought at the time) fish for tea.

I should know better all the same as I once bought a couple of pillows from a chap who came round........he said they were surplus stock from where they had been delivering, they felt fine in the sealed bag they were in but when I opened them up they had a real foosty smell and had obviously been damp

only other thing I have bought from a random seller was horse dung!
no problems there ,it was good stuff

My sister has has gypsies selling lucky white heather before/wanting to read her palm etc.

We never used to get anybody at the last house but up here we get all sorts. I had a man selling tea the other week and yesterday I had a Cleaneezee catalogue man - but no fish yet.
Enough of your nonsense - get back to the Play Pen!

Launch of scheme in Edinburgh East to help prevent doorstep selling.
