Lord Rosebery vs South Queensferry

One for the POL RoS Posse !!!

Talking to a colleague about the Virgin/Sky debacle today - didn't know that South Queensferry don't have cable - because Lord Rosebery refused them access!

This surprised me, given the nature of SE land reforms and this being a "service".

What's the legality of this kind of situation? Anyone got any links? Is this ongoing or is that it for SQ residents who want cable?

Nothing to do with RoS. We don't deal with "negatives" like this! We deal with what people do in deeds.

And anyway, private company says "we want to dig up field and lay cables"... Landowner says "actually, no"... Private company should find an alternate route or up what they are willing to pay in "compensation".

Cable TV certainly isn't an essential service, and many areas of Edinburgh are without it (including my own house).

Yes. That's why I put "service" in thingies. I would have thought that Telewest would/could find a route around - it's not like Rosebery House is a big doughnut of land ensnaring SQ - but it's a parallel with the Branson/Murdoch spat that the residents of SQ get cut off from TW's bitpipe cos of someone else's argument.

Depends on the route the cable folk want to take, but the Estate is huge and in effect does surround SQ. A route that avoids the Estate would probably make the cost prohibitvely expensive? It's a pity for SQ as their reception is bad because of location/metal & concrete bridges/tide!! Spoke to a colleague who lives in SQ - he knew nothing about Lord Thingy having anything to do with lack of cable there (not that that proves the truth or not of the denial of access!).

Telewest only installed cable in certain bits, my dad lives off Portobello High St and couldn't get cable phone/tv.
They didn't go as far as Musselburgh or outside Edinburgh. Don't know if it was cost of digging up or landowners blocking it.
When my mum moved out to Midlothian she got Sky for a while but got fed up and now has freeview.
If I get time later today I'll try giving Virgin a phone to see if they'll drop the price a wee bit.
Seems like I should say I'm lost without Lost or start on about Stargate. ( noticed Babylon 5 1st series on teleport, good something to watch whilst doing the ironing )

Happy 900th post Soupy. I watched The Best Of The Word on teleport (4od).

Telewest did their digging in phases and once they were done with certain bits, you had to wait a while until they started up again. I've just been really lucky with my streets

Freeview boxes rock - if you have the reception.

My dad is lucky in that he gets a great reception on a freeview box even with an indoor ariel ( but you can see the mast at Burntisland from his window). Tried it here but not so good so we may have to get an outdoor ariel, not esential at mo as got the cable.
When we 1st got Telewest about 11 years ago we were payng the same for the wee tv package and line rental as we were paying BT for just the line rental.

Remember how much BT used to charge for renting a handset off them?

Seems silly now.

BT line rentals - oof. I've thought of ditching Telewest and shopping about for an ADSL/Sky package, but the thought of getting a BT line again makes me feel ill.

It's Lord Primrose, (7th) Earl of Rosebery, and the Estate is Dalmeny Estate while their shack is Dalmeny House. One passes it on ones walk to/from SQ and Crammond along the shore. Cannot find any 'news' about access being denied, but then have not looked that hard!!

On his land there's a golf course, plus an annual classic car rally. His house is open to the public sometimes, and he is known to have flogged off land to developers.

All of which adds up to a toff who will do stuff for money - I wonder if the price was wrong when it came to the bitpipe?

Maybe Dick Branson will make him a better offer.

Apparently some of the Sky channels may be taken off Freeview too in a few months!

I got Freeview as an integral part my new TV. I wasn't bovvered at the time, but get full screen on nearly all channels within distortion etc, so I'm a big fan now!!

Yes, apparently they want to withdraw their present free channels on Freeview so they can replace them with Sky One and others................which they're going to charge for.
