Life on Mars

Post by Porty » 21 Feb 2007, 17:33

I like this show. When I saw the first episode I thought that they are not going to be able to sustain this for any length of time. Now we are in the second series they are doing a no bad job.

A friend, who has recently been a court witness to a really violent attack by a group of men, who all "got off", intimated that he wished policing was more like LOM today. Not sure he is right about that but its fun all the same.

My younger kids love LOM, though I do have to explain some things, like why there was a test card, why no breakfast telly, what trim phones were and yes we did dress like that!

And what about the smoking? They were even doing it over a dead body in the mortuary.

Little did they know at that timethat that smartass Amanda whats her face out of Silent Witness could solve serial murders from the shape of a wound.

Yes youngest did comment on the smoking! He's developed a liking for David Bowie. Thought I might have to dig out the old vinyl for him but he downloaded a few tracks to his mp3. Thats a innovation they never saw coming on Tommorrows World!

Oh and the whine as the tv stopped transmitting, had to explain that, and the little dot when switched off.
And sideburns!

Ah the good old days

I'm sure I read somewhere that this will be the last series :( Still, I can't wait to see how it's going to end :) About 90% of the music on my MP3 player is 70s music including Queen, David Bowie, Alice Cooper, Roxy Music, Yes and Mott the Hoople.

Love the show, can't wait to see the outcome at the end of this series either....but will probably then be depressed that there's no more. :(

Although I hear there's talk of Gene Hunt taking centre-stage in a spin-off 80's show.... 8)

How about the "boss" and the rest of the cops are projected forward to a police force in 2007? They would be banged up after about a week.

I'm glad to learn this is the last series as I'm already detecting (no pun intended) a "thinness" in the plots. Best to quit at the top.

Heard the idea is being exported to USA. Wonder what they'll do with the format?

It will be sad that this is the last series but they couldn't really string the idea out much longer I feel.
I take my hat ( the big purple fluffy one ) off to the design team and props buyers for all those wee things that remind us of the 70s.

Was '73 not the year of the smock tops fashion. I remember half the year looked pregnant at the school disco.......

boom boom

Remember Aztec bars, Spangles, Marathons, tank tops, those wide collars, kipper ties, raiding the Christmas accessories to mix with vaseline to get the glitter look?
Jackie magazine, hot rolls from the bakers in bath St, Rickys kiosk for a shivery bite after swimming, chittering in the open air pool?

It was on the Prom next to the pool. The family ran the Sands hotel and there was an ice cream kiosk at the foot of the garden. ? Valvona family

Ricky's was at the foot of Belfield Street beside the baths. Fantastic burgers and onions. Ricky is still going strong.

Depends on how you look at it, opposite could mean on the sand! The kiosk was there when it was still called Melville St. There's a thing, when did all the street names change?
Decimalisation came in in 71 didn't it , Mr Soupy still thinks in LSD, gets outraged at the prices when converted. Diety help us if we ever go Euro

They did seem to be to me. Not only did I have to rename te street where Nan lived I had to get to grips with all these new coins.

Bellfied St used to be Melville St
Marlborough St was Wellington St
Pittville St was Pitt St

12 pennies in a shilling, 20 shillings in a pound
thrup'ney bits
silver sixpences (or a tanner)
half crowns

New coinage doesn't have any nicknames

Melville Street became Bellfield Street on 1 May 1968
Hope Street became Rosefield Street 1 November 1966
Ramsay Lane became Beach Lane 1 August 1967 and Ramsay Gardens became part of Bath Street on the same date.

Funny I thought the street changes were all done at once, mind you at that age I was more concerned with buying chocolate sliders ( black man ) from Rickys than what adults were doing with the names.

I remember watching a piano smashing party from my Nans windows in Mellville/ Bellfield St. Wonder when that was?

Nice ice cream
Funny enough I never thought it un PC to ask for a" blackman"
According to Mary Contini in either Dear Francesca or Dear Olivia it was a reference to the dark hair and swarthy looks of the ice cream sellers

Oh man, I still have withdrawal symptoms. They were just the best burgers ever, the onions were really well cooked, not these raw things you get these days.(and just a wee touch of brown sauce) =P~ =P~

Y'know some days I wonder myself!
Suppose I'll have to explain to the youngsters its Pounds, Shillings and Pence, why the L and the D though?

Was transported back in time today. My ma in law is to be decanted to another house in the Thistle Foundation, some time soon. We started clearing out the "linen" cupboard and curtains that date from 1974 ( the year they came back from Oz) onwards. Fetching brown and orange mixes, some fibreglass types, then into the '80s with pastel pink and grey etc.
Other finds include bri nylon sheets (from Brentfords in George St), stripey flannelette sheets and a gas mask.

After haording these treasures for years they're now mostly in the bin, anything reusable will be appearing in local charity shops soon ( see they do have a use those shops)

Who ever thought bri nylon sheets were a good idea. I can remember snagging toe nails and sweating away in them!
