Vista - Yay or Nay?

Post by impossiblevoices » 15 Feb 2007, 16:44

Are any of you lot using Windows Vista yet?

I bought a Sony laptop in October last year running Windows XP Media Centre Edition. I have just found out that I can upgrade to Windows Vista Home Premium Edition for the knockdown bargain basement one time only price of £17.63!

Seems like a bargain! Is anyone else using Vista though? What do you think? Is it really that much better than XP?

Also, for the geeks out there... Do you have to do a clean install or is there an upgrade install that lets you keep all your installed apps and data? Critically, does your cracked XP software still run ok? (!Cheeky, I know...!)

You can download this to help you see what apps will run under Vista.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/produc ... visor.mspx

According to this month's Computer Music mag a lot of audio apps won't work yet. The software companies have to produce new drivers for Vista and a lot of them haven't got round to it yet.

Ableton Live doesn't work but Sonar does.

Cracked software? Don't know what you mean................

Cheers for the link Ali!

Everything seems to be ok on the laptop front. Only Alcohol120% and Nero 6 won't work...

Might be a different kettle of fish with the music pc tho...

Haven't seen much about it yet, but why should I pay all that money for it when xp serves me well enough. I always feel that 'If it aint broke don't fix it'

IV, got a link to the details of that offer? As an owner (or rather, a sucker) of the 64-bit version of XP Pro I'm supposedly: "If you are currently using Windows 2000 Professional or Windows XP Professional x64, you are eligible for an upgrade copy to a corresponding or better edition of Windows Vista, but a clean install is required."

I wouldn't normally bother, and I'd never recommend it to anyone else (the driver support isn't there) but I'm currently looking at a system re-install due to a RAID disk failure and me then buying a replacement disk which is a mere 2mb too small (so I can't simply whack it in and rebuild the RAID array).

Argh.
