Please Help Me.

Post by gilo » 08 Dec 2006, 20:32

I need your help because I thnk I need a wii.

A couple of days a go I read a review of this in The List. The review was very positive and I looked it up on the internet out of curiosity. It's released today and what was immediately apparent was that there was a huge demand for it.

I then tried different places to try to find somewhere that stocked it. Before I knew where I was I wanted it as a Christmas present and was really frustrated that I couldn't buy it.

Today I went into Fort whatever and went into the shops and haven't been able to buy it. I've had many a chat with 16 year old spotty oiks about shipping problems. I tried Game, HMV, PC World, Currys, Comet and Toysarse. One oik told me John Lewis has loads of them. I phoned John Lewis and was ready to hot foot it into town, they'd sold out, none before christmas. At this point I new I had to have it.

Now here's the point. I know I don't want one. I hate all that playstation gaming stuff. I don't want my children to have one ( poor sods are the only ones, everyone at school has psp's gameboys coming out of their ears), yet I still need one. what's going on?

Please talk me down before I succeed in making a purchase I really don't want.

You'll be lucky to get one before Xmas. I preordered one for Clanger 4 , with several companies and 2 places have already said they cant guarantee delivery before 25th.
Did get one though, arrived this afternoon. Think I've canceled the others but if they do arrive I'll pm you.
How much is it worth?

Noooooooooooooooooo!!!! Don't find me one, read my post! I need you to de-programme my consumerist urges. I really don't want this, I only think I do. It's a simple trick of the mind which is intensified by its lack of availabilty and could cost me a lot of money.

Don't know how to cure your urges Gilo, but they must be contagious......I've not played a games console for ages, but have found myself over the last few days also having strange urges to have a wii.

Maybe there's subliminal advertising at work.......or maybe it was the copious amounts of wine I drank at a Christmas party last night! :D

IV your right, I'm going to re-double my efforts.

Talking of consumables, just got a new Dyson going yesterday, what an experience. Have you seen how hard these beauties suck?

There's a joke in there I'm not even going to go for!!!

But I know what you mean, Gilo. I had to buy a new Dyson Slim DC18 Allergy, in June ... and believe me, my carpets have never been so happy about the sucking they got!

I thought I'd bought a mini-black hole!!!

This is beginning to annoy me.

I was doing a spot of Christmas shopping at Fukinnard and went into Toysrus. I passed the Wii stand and had a quick word with a member of staff who revelled in the mystery of it all. No they didn't have any, but they might any day. No they couldn't reserve one, I'd have to keep trying. Oh tell me something I don't know.

Anyway, fed up with it all I did the rest of my shopping. On the way back to my car I thought I'd pop into PC World and ask there, as the staff in there always seem to pride themselves about knowing loads about stuff. I asked the man (who looked and behaved uncannily like the man out of the Nationwide advert) whether they might have a Wii before Christmas. He said he really didn't think so, then he kind of leaned forward and said that he had heard "unofficially" that Game were taking a delivery of 70 next week and they only had a few reserved. My heart began to race and we spent a few moments nodding and winking at each other.

I hot footed it out of the shop and started walking, at high speed, to Game (if you've seen the walking races they have in the Olympics you'll be able to picture the scene). I practiced my winking and nodding on the way, whilst pushing passed other shoppers.

On arrival there were only one or two customers in the store and I headed straight for the desk. I told him that I really needed a Wii and then started to nod and wink. He said that they'd all sold out, they're not taking any reservations, then became a bit cryptic about what might be happening later in the week. They may get some, some may go on general sale, or may be not. I just knew he was enjoying it, looking at me thinking I was some poor, sad knob of a nobody. I knew he was thinking that I had the cheek to come into his shop and asked for a Wii when any half witted bloody gamer knew you needed to reserve one in September. He played with me then I left.

Now here is the funny thing. On the way to Game, when I thought I could have a Wii, I started to have feelings of not wanting one. As soon as I was told no way, well maybe, well probably not but keep trying, I was desperate for a Wii again.

I can see those bloody Nintendo Executive Marketing £@%^& plotting to reel in sad £$%@^ like myself. Oh we'll release one on this day one on that, that'll get the real sad cases chasing their tails.

Now I'm serious, I don't want the whole of the next two weeks to be me running around a shopping centre like a demented fool trying to buy this product. I am a victim of some very clever marketing people, I need help.

Saw one today on ebay that went for £490 how nuts is that?

It does seem a marketing ploy so don't be sucked in to the consumerism.
Dont be pawn in the capitalist game.
Dont let them manipulate you.

I had several wiis today. I like the joystick you get with it! Very firm and extremely tactile. Could've played with it all day, if I didn't have so many chores! :(

Interesting point Gilo. Found this on joystiq :

"You better bring it! After taking a pounding in the last console generation, along with pre-E3 cries Nintendo would become a third party developer like Sega, Bloomberg reports Nintendo will spend in excess of $200 million marketing the Wii to make sure they don't come in last again.

The $200 million will be spent over the next year and is the largest advertising campaign in Nintendo's history. You can expect to see Wii commercials starting this week. The message will focus on Wii being family-friendly and easy to use, but the main demographic being targeted is adults. 80 percent of the budget will be spent convincing adults to purchase the system and shaking off Nintendo's traditional consumer perception of being for children and teens.

Hardcore gamers can debate which system is greater till pigs fly, the cow come home and hell freezes over. $200 million is a lot of money to spend on an advertising campaign. Nintendo is pushing for the masses with an affordable gaming console. 2007 is going to be a very interesting year."

---------

This is interesting because I have never been a Nintendo fan but I have been really feeling the ads! Nintendo for me were always all about cutesy games like Super Mario and Pokemon. Don't get me wrong, there have been some classics, Zelda or Metroid anyone?

However, this time round, they have been showing off the console with games like Call of Duty 3 and Red Steel. They look amazing and the control system, if it is intuative enough, looks fantastic.

One thing I think they have messed up on is the lack of HD. Nowadays lots more people have HD Ready tv's so to produce a 'nextgen' console with no HDMI output seems a bit silly. It does have component out, which can carry an HD signal easily, but the ATI Hollywood graphics card only supports up to 480p! My second hand, 3 year old xbox can do better than that...

Wii'll see...
