I like cake.

I'm not that good a making them, does anyone have a good suggestion about a cake they particularly liked and where to get it?

Best artificial cream cakes :

Costco. That bakery at the back of the shop makes everything from muffins to birthday cakes - we've had both. Really fresh, really yummy.

Best fresh cream cakes :

Sicilian pastry shop on Albert Street. Last year we ditched Xmas pud and got a cream cake from there. It was lovely.

Yes I can vouch for Costco muffins - the kids love them.

Nigella lawson has a some brilliant cake recipes in her cook book. The Lemon drizzle cake comes out scrummy and my kids cook a lot of it so it must be an easy recipe.

Carrot Cake - Favorit in Potterow (?) - tremendous - huge portion, moist with discernible carrot bits, served with cream - *drool*

also highly recommended - Kaffe Politik in Marchmont Road - not such big portions and therefore a bit expensive but lovely smooth textured cake with large thick coat of butter icing. *dribble*

Two favourite haunts of ours. Favorit is excellent pre and post club.

At the top of the mound just opposite the bank hq there used to be an excellent cafe with loads of flavoured coffees, and Dime Bar cake. I think you can buy Dime Bar cake from Ikea actually.

Marks and Spencer do a delicious carrot cake in their chilled section. It is lovely and moist with a really tasty orangey flavoured filling and topping.

My favourite cake has to be my home made fresh plum cake though. It is scrummy but a bit time consuming to make. It is best made with Victoria plums so I only tend to make it in the summer. This year I kept eating the plums before I could get round to making the cake though

The Gallery of Modern Art cafe at Dean, do a fabulous "made on the premises" chocolate fudge brownie, unlike any other...little bit gooey in the middle, ever so slightly crunchy on the outside and all lovely and chocolately, but not too rich, couldn't eat a whole one though

Yes I have been there a few times. Its a nice building but never seems that busy when I've been. Good food tho.

I miss the refreshment room at the baths but that's been gone for about 10 years i think.

If you are impressed by the deli's carrot cake then if you ever taste the carrot cake from Favorit you will probably experience such pleasure you will probably have to be hospitalised.

do you mean the Dean gallery cafe or Gallery of Modern art. I like a nice brownie so I think I'll be heading there saturday morning for my elevenses.

Nice ideas on the other fronts thank you, I like the idea of Favorit and look back fondly at staying out until after 10.30pm. I think I might set my alarm for the early hours and head there for the post club carrot cake.

Next time Beach Babe makes carrot cake I'll keep you a bit. Her butter icing has Dairylea/Philadelphia in it and is the nicest I've ever had. The cake itself is nearly perfect, or at least as good as mortals have experienced.

We could actually organise a parallel taste test of Favorit, Deli and BB carrot cakes. POL Cake Night.

There's a great Aladdin's cave of a cake shop just up the road from Metropole, it's called the Filling Station - in between the Blockbuster and the Post Office. Going into that shop makes you feel like Charlie must have felt entering the Willy Wonka factory for the first time, there's cake and sweets everywhere, even hanging from the ceilings. It actually difficult to be able to see the 2 women behind the counter for all the "goodies".

I love hot milk, especially the skin that forms if you leave it for a while

haven't had it for ages though.
Funny, Epykat always has tea when she's at my house, must remember to offer her some hot milk instead,next time she's around

OK I've named tomorrow "CAKE DAY"

I'm starting with pain au chocolat for breakfast, chocolate fudge brownie for elevenses, birthday cake and chocolate fudge pudding in the evening. I just need to think about the afternoon.

Trying , for the 1st time in my life, to make a fruit cake. How often and for how long should I feed it with brandy?

If you don't get a sensible answer on here SD, I'll ask my friend. Her mother made my wedding cake for me and now my friend makes my Christmas cake every year. It is delicious and never lasts much beyond Boxing Day!

My dad used to take us to Clarinda's tea room when we were small - it's not changed. Their home baking is fantastic - from rock buns to crumbles.

They do Viennese coffee, and hot milk with honey & nutmeg.

How often and for how long should I feed it with brandy?

I seem to remember poking the bottom* of Christmas cake six times with a knitting needle and pouring a tablespoon or two of brandy every so often (daily maybe weekly

). * Maybe the bottom one time and the top the next.

Keep it moist but not soggy!!
