Nobody does family boardgames like the Germans.

Here's the list of newly published games from this year's expo at Essen :

It's an enormous page, and this is just scratching the surface.

Anyone remember any odd boardgames - maybe from the seventies?

We used to play this weird one called Ecology, where 3 players fought to control the board - lava, trees and houses (from what I remember!)

I also found a bizarre one called "Coup" which had the most bizarre rules I ever read - it was meant to be a family boardgame but read like the plot of that Freddie Forsyth novel - The Dogs Of War.

I can't wait to be beaten at boardgames by the neo-Dadas.

Take the Brain- I used to love playing that but it may have been 60's not 70's.

I have an original version of Magic Robot. It was definitely way ahead of Trivial Pursuit and the robot was never wrong...cos he was magic!

wow this board game was light years ahead of its time, when green was the colour you went when seeing your mates new ZX Spectrum.

Tell me about it.

We had the poor man's Speccy - the ZX81.

Then we had the poor man's BBC Micro - the Acorn Electron.

That's why I love emulators so much - you totally get to play the things you never had as a kid.

Well I remember getting a christmas present (and it wasn't just for me but to all the family) which was the electronic game you plug up to the telly and have those two lines and a dot for tennis, or one line and a dot for squash. To top it all it was second hand!

Second hand sounds quite posh to me Gilo. We had to go round to our auntie's to use hers. It had a difficulty button on it which made the angles at which the white square rebounded off the white lines steeper. As you can imagine/remember, that made it even more exciting.

I still like games like that. Is it because I'm an imbecile?

Most of the Clangers and a couple of pals are in tonight so the board games are out but they've changed the rules. Zombie Cluedo is just starting, they played rude word scabble earlier which made me blush!

Wow , no they hadn't thought of all that but I'll print it out.
Stuck my head round the door long enough to find out that the characters are all dead and are trying to find the suicide amongst them.
It seems to involve a lot of noise and questioning of paternity!? Come back Studio24, Saturdays used to be quiet around here.

Looked up the zombies board game. Think Santa has an idea what to bring now!

Funny you should mention zombies and Studio24 cos goths dance like zombies. All swaying hands and stuff. Ask any Sisters Of Mercy fan.

Calton Studios is perfect for them really - small, dark, low-down forgotten hole near a graveyard. The kind of club you can lurk near.

Yes they LOVED it ,but Studio 24 aren't doing the under 18s club at the moment. and they dont fancy the chances of coming out unscathed from any of Edinburgh's other under 18s clubs.
