Lyrical Interpretations

Post by Porty » 30 Sep 2006, 21:31

Every now and again I get a litlle intrigued by what some song lyrics may mean? Does it happen to you? An example of one of those songs is "E bow the letter" by REM. I know that the term E Bow is something to do with an accessory for a guitar but what the hell is the rest of this song about?

Rem - E-Bow The Letter

Look up, what do you see?
All of you and all of me
Fluorescent and starry
Some of them, they surprise

The bus ride, I went to write this, 4:00 a.m.
This letter
Fields of poppies, little pearls
All the boys and all the girls sweet-toothed
Each and every one a little scary
I said your name

I wore it like a badge of teenage film stars
Hash bars, cherry mash and tinfoil tiaras
Dreaming of Maria Callas
Whoever she is
This fame thing, I don't get it
I wrap my hand in plastic to try to look through it
Maybelline eyes and girl-as-boy moves
I can take you far
This star thing, I don't get it

I'll take you over, there
I'll take you over, there
Aluminum, tastes like fear
Adrenaline, it pulls us near

I'll take you over
It tastes like fear, there
I'll take you over

Will you live to 83?
Will you ever welcome me?
Will you show me something that nobody else has seen?
Smoke it, drink
Here comes the flood
Anything to thin the blood
These corrosives do their magic slowly and sweet
Phone, eat it, drink
Just another chink
Cuts and dents, they catch the light
Aluminum, the weakest link

I don't want to disappoint you
I'm not here to anoint you
I would lick your feet
But is that the sickest move?
I wear my own crown and sadness and sorrow
And who'd have thought tomorrow could be so strange?
My loss, and here we go again

I'll take you over, there
I'll take you over, there
Aluminum, tastes like fear
Adrenaline, it pulls us near

I'll take you over
It tastes like fear, there
I'll take you over

Look up, what do you see?
All of you and all of me
Fluorescent and starry
Some of them, they surprise

I can't look it in the eyes
Seconal, Spanish fly, absinthe, kerosene
Cherry-flavored neck and collar
I can smell the sorrow on your breath
The sweat, the victory and sorrow
The smell of fear, I got it

I'll take you over, there
I'll take you over, there
Aluminum, tastes like fear
Adrenaline, it pulls us near

I'll take you over
It tastes like fear, there
I'll take you over

Pulls us near
Tastes like fear.

Nearer, nearer
Over, over, over, over
Yeah, look over
I'll take you there, oh, yeah
I'll take you there
Oh, over
I'll take you there
Over, let me
I'll take you there..
There, there, baby, yeah

I had the radio on coming back from church this morning and it was that daft song with the chorus
"Hot dog
Jumping Frog
Albuquerque "
What on earth is that all about :?: :?

An E-Bow is a type of electro magnet that replaces a pick. Screws aroud with the magnetic fields that a eletric guitar's pickup uses. If you know the song 'She's a Star' by James then it's the wierd guitar sound in that. For those of you who like louder music then Pete Lundgreen of Opeth plays one on loads of their songs. Also a mate of mine played me an album of bass instrumentals which were played with one. Don't know who that was by though.

Still not sure what the song's about though. Man on the moon was about that bad commedian from Taxi but no idea on this one (maybe he's saying aluminium can't be magnetised by an ebow?? )

Absolute gibberish. I thought their first single, Everybody Hurts, was a lovely song but this is just rubbish. When does it come out?

Absinthe is a delicious strong drink, I've just started drinking it, but I don't know what the other three refer to :!: :!: :?

Well, I'm not sure exactly, cos it's quite hard to get hold of. But apparently the Marquis De Sade used to use it, so it must be quite good.

Seconal is a barbiturate. Keep away from that stuff, man.

Kerosene is, er, kerosene.

I was thinking more about this one Arachnid..
A warning about Spanish fly

Spanish fly, a substance made from the dried-out bodies of beetles, is reputed to be a powerful sexual aid. Taken as a powder, solution or tablet, it's understood to heat up the sexual organs and make you insatiable. On the contrary, Spanish fly is toxic and can actually be dangerous.
