Portobello Woodcraft Group

Post by Bob Jefferson » 06 Sep 2006, 22:03

On behalf of a friend:
Friday night sessions with Portobello Woodcraft have started up again. Groups meet from 6.15pm to 7.30pm on a Friday evening throughout school term time. We are based at St. James Church Halls in Rosefield Place, Portobello. We have three groups running at present, the Elfins, Pioneers and Venturers group. Elfins are for children aged 5 to 9 years, Pioneers from 10 to 12 years, and Venturers from 13 to 15 years.

Weekly sessions are run and coordinated by parents and volunteers, and include games, arts and crafts, outdoor and issue based activities. We try to organise fun and educational activities which encourage the children to work and play cooperatively and to care for their environment and think about others.

We are keen to attract more children between 10 and 12 and their parents for the Pioneer group. Come and make a film about Portobello for Portobelly Telly. We also hope to build up our new Venturer group for young people in S2 and S3 who are interested in organising and participating in small group activities, coordinated by themselves and facilitated by an adult.

Please come and visit our stall at the Festival of Learning or contact us for more information. Contact Rachel Harrison or Kathleen Bolt on 669 8966 or 657 2265 about Pioneers and Venturers or Jane Lewis, Elfins on 669 5591. Ask for a programme and come along to a session!

Great idea ... but I wouldn't know a tenon from a fret-saw from a chisel. All my woodwork efforts at school ended up binned! :( Mr Useless.

Good luck to all the kids ... just tell them "Jesus wis a Jiner" and "Joseph wis a chippie" and watch them grab the tools!
