PC Gone Mad!

Did you see it on the News? Tom and Jerry cartoons are to be systematically gone through and recut, to take out any smoking in them. Even though these cartoons are 56 years old???

I watched, nay LOVED Tom and Jerry since I was a wean... and I don't smoke!!! Nor do I fight with frying pans, irons and/or whatever comes to hand ... but, obviously the violence is fine.

The world has gone stark staring mental!

I'm glad I'm not a child in this day and age ( showing my age!!!)

It was o.k. to watch programmes like " Tom and Gerry" without anyone thinking it would do us any harm. Hasn't done me or my family any harm either, although sometimes I'm tempted to hit someone with the frying pan!!!

Could even walk along the beach or anywhere just about and we'd be safe doing so on our own!!
It's such a sad and unsafe world we live in these days

You are about as safe now as you were then. For example child murder by strangers has remained at a pretty constant (and very low) level over the last few decades. Plus as a child you are much more likely to be killed under the age of three (3 times) and it is much more likely to be your parent that does it. The perception and fear has changed for which you can thank the British media. I personally think the Jamie Bulger case had a big impact on the National Pyche as it was caught on film. Sorry to be so morbid, but I think it is a crying shame that we are living in a society where the truth is distortated and fear prevails.

I read what had actually happened and a few papers have taken this overboard.

Boomerang (Cartoon Network's channel for old HB cartoons) is making 2 small cuts to 2 Tom and Jerry films that are too be shown on their channel only. These show Tom trying to chat up a female cat by smoking in front of her. Despite what certain papers said there are still a load of cartoons which show Tom smoking and it is only 2 cartoons - "Anchors away" and a number of joke cigars exploding are not affected.

In this day and age of trying to steer children away from smoking and trying to show that it isn't big and clever, this sounds like a good idea to me. I'm all for freedom of speach and all that and if it was an adult channel I wouldn't mind but a channel aimed at children shouldn't be giving them the impression this is a cool thing to do. If one of the Powerpuff girls said smoking was cool it would be instantly pulled off the telly - why is a cat from 60 years ago any different.

PC is people justifying a lack of having a life by running about with bits of paper trying to ban life's enjoyment!

Anyone who says that we shouldn't now have a third PC thread is discriminating against PC threads.

Much as I enjoy poetry, I didn't write them (more's the pity!). I first found them under anonymous. But last night, I discovered the poetry archives and Mr Nobody is accredited to a John Drinkwater of the USA in 1817 or thereabouts ... as for the rest ... I wish people would credit the real authors.

Poetry is a much misunderstood and maligned art. There was a time poets were lionised in this country ... now they're more likely to be mauled!

I'm sure Marguerite would understand.

You all need more poetry and song in your lives. Can we start up a thread and sticky it??? Please??????? Poetry is good for the soul ... if it exists ... which isn't proven ... not by a long shot ... err ... I'll tippytoe away right now, shall I??
