This is Chester - he is a rescue tabby we've had for about 5 years now. He is 13 and is a charming cross between Victor Meldrew and Dustin Hoffman's character in Rain Man.

This is Marmaduke, a rescue cat who was already quite old before we got him... He had two happy years in our Home For Retired Gentlecats before his kidneys failed.

And what a nice photo there - checking out what's going on in and out of the room whilst simultaneously sunning himself and looking cool - only cats can do that.

I'm sure he found that scaffolding outside interesting, and I'm sure your pot plant had the odd nibble mark on it!!!!

This is our very superior Lily. (Well, it is if i've worked out how to do the image thing properly - if not you can all laugh at me for a minute...but only for a minute!)
Some of you may recognise her picture from the cover of Vogue. Or do I mean from the lampposts of Portobello, from the time we thought we'd lost her a few years ago. A policeman called to say he'd found her and picked her up, but had rapidly put her down again and had the scars to prove he'd tried. Anyway, turned out she was just hanging out with the Bath Street Neds for a few days, roughing it. Came home bleary-eyed, stinking of booze and fags and swearing like a trooper. Slammed doors a lot and told us she hated us anyway but could we lend her a tenner for some more cider and a packet of fags? Not pregnant though...that time.

... And this is Tilly, another rescue cat who loves nothing more than to follow us round the house watching everything we do. She's useless with seagulls though. We had a huge seagull on the windowsill the other day, pecking at the glass and the putty, and Tilly just watched, looking slightly bored.

Yes, Lily is a siamese, with an appropriately exaggerated sense of her own worth. And she's not a rescue cat. But we do have a rescue dog. We got him to be company for our old rescue dog, but old dog took one look at baby dog and said "I'm out of here" and died three weeks later.

But at least his last week was happy - we went camping, to dumfries. We took the children, the new dog, the old dog, and Lily. It was like the Incredible Journey. Being stalked to the toilet block by a Siamese cat.

All this talk of moggies reminds me of our Maddie (short for Madonna).

She shuffled off her mortal coil shortly after we moved to Porty last year, and is greatly missed (despite being the most irritating cat I'd ever met). If anyone knows of any kittens around, please get in touch. Mrs Skeely would like something in monochrome (grey nosed) with short hair, but I'm not fussy. We've heard there is a shortage as more people have their cats neutered these days.

There does seem to be a shortage round here for kittens. When our old cat died at 17, we had trouble finding kittens and ended up getting two from the Cats Protection in Carlisle! The problem there was that one of them at least (the one we still have) is definitely partly wild and probably her Dad was from a farm (they're all the same these country boys!). If I hear of any I'll let you know, although there are some lovely older cats at the Dog and Cat home.

I concur. There is a lovely place down Leith Walk where I first met Chester - (cat protection league? something like that).

I phoned in the morning and they told me about a couple of cats, but said they were shut for lunch from 1-2. So I waited until after 2 during which time our wee boy had been brought in and was in an outside caged area, having just been "rescued" (given away by someone who we don't really like in our house). He was sitting on a windowsill and had been mewing to be let inside since being brought in. *And* there was a nasty cat in the caged bit who was hissing at Chester.

Chester and I had a brief conversation, and left together in a taxi.

Since then our relationship has been very close, even though there have been times when I think he is using me.

As for Mrs Surrealist - well, that was love at first sight. He thinks she is the proverbial dog's thingies.

we have a friend down south who breeds Burmese kittens and has just had a litter a few weeks ago. she is a big man u. fan and has called the cutest one (who was actually the weakest of the litter and she didn't think he'd survive) "Golden Balls". GB thrived - the wee soul decided he was hungry after all (he hadn't started feeding, which is not good news for a kitten) and after his first big feed he did his first big burp.

anyways, today we heard that our friend is trying to wean the kittens but hasn't had much success so far - she put out dried food for them and they thought it was cat litter, and peed in it.

wee souls.

We would go for an adult cat (maddie was inherited at an unknown age), but we've got a 4 month old person, and I've heard stories about cats sitting on babies and suffocating them. I figure that if we get a kitten, by the time she's big enough to smother a baby, the baby will be big enough to look after herself. Am I worrying about nothing? Is it an old wives tale?

Aw surrealist, that's gorgeous - both of them!
My other half used to have a tonkinese - he was soooo gorgeous, but didn't like strangers i.e. me. They also had a cat that was half burmese who was also lovely. And i once had a persian that somene else couldn't cope with, but then with regards to small people, my persian girl hated my baby boy, refused to coe near him and therefore us, and subsequently began pining for lack of attention since she preferred to hide in the attic.
I'm not sure whether or not the cat suffocating babies thing is what you'd call an old wives' tale (and those old wives did know a thing or two, after all). My male cat never tried to get into the moses basket but my female persian did, and Lily did it too when we had our youngest. But...in the animal kingdom a lot can depend on their notions of hierarchy, and if you already have a small person, i think a new cat is more likely to leave them well alone because the small person is there before the cat. Cats who were there first seem to be more of a problem because they had a place in the hierarchy they've now lost.
Unlike dogs, who KNOW they're always at the bottom anyway!!!

This is our cat, Sara. She is now 15 - nearly 16 years old is is still a real Lady!

And this is Kitty - originally Katey but, as she was the youngest of our 4 cat family, she got called Kitty - now 15years old this year.

She loves getting her tummy rubbed and although a bit shy, once she gets to know you she will offer her tummy to you at any time for a wee rub.

They are good friends and this is Kitty getting ready for the vets with a farewell from Sara.

I had 2 other cats until recently - Chester the wonderful, affectionate, wise tom who died 2 years ago at the age of 17years old and Jenny the feminist not to be messed with who got run over 6years ago at the age of 14years old. Miss them both still.

Chester passed away on Saturday night after a long illness. He came to stay with us in 1999 as an 8 year-old rescue moggie and was very much loved by all of us. He will be so sadly missed but is at peace.
