View from the kayak

Post by GRANTY » 23 Jul 2006, 19:32

Spotted today from my kayak were several seals and a good batch of puffins, all very close to shore! I also encountered the triathalon swimmers...not to be confused with a pod of porpoise! I've got a spare set of kit, so if any POL's fancy a go, PM me. It's another world out there.

I tried a kayak once. The only view I got was underwater and lots of bubbles escaping when it turned over with me inside. I never got in one again. :(

seals

Post by GRANTY » 24 Jul 2006, 19:10

The seals are virtually always out and about at the back of the Rockville Inn at Joppa, but reasonably far out from shore. I've seen a few at Bellfield Street, there was the famous Bath Street seal and yesterdays ones were level with the Dalriada. The were on the shore side of the yellow bouys. The puffins were much closer to shore, approximately at the foot of James Street. As for photos, I've never mastered the art of taking photos and staying upright!

Does that mean you've got a spare kayak too Granty? I used to kayak as a schoolkid many moons ago but doubt if I could manage an Eskimo roll these days. I went out last year on a nice calm loch in a canoe (what we used to call a Canadian canoe) and quite enjoyed it but Homer, my other half, was so taken with it he started to look at the cost of buying one forourselves. I know he would be really keen to try out a kayak but would he need to be able to carry out an Eskimo roll before he could go out in the bay with you? He's got good upper body strength and is a competent swimmer but hasn't had any experience of a kayak with a spray deck. :?
