Following propulsion into the iPod world, I have quickly realised that the world of download albums is not for me - I like a product to have and to hold (and preferably vinyl, at that)

But I love the idea of Podcasts - ephemeral and yet real, constantly changing, and better yet, selected by others with more knowledge and better connections!

Oh, and lots of them are free.

Somebody else at last!!!

I posted this almost a year ago and got nothing :

Any else here into "podcasts"?

For the uninitiated, a podcast is just an mp3 of (usually) a radio show which has been made available on the web by the people who originally aired it.

To get them you download a special program (the latest iTunes does it) and subscribe to any of a blizzard of shows - a lot of radio shows in the US which syndicate to other stations nationwide are now podcasting too.

Last week at work I listened to a rather odd assortment of audio - all of which I got for free by downloading shows :

1. recordings of historical speeches by John Glenn (when he got into trouble during the Friendship 7 / Gemini orbit mission), Nixon (detailing his personal finances) and Martin Luther King.

2. a fantastic show called "Verbivores" where the kind of people who used to inhabit the dictionary desk on Countdown talk about, well, words. maybe more for your English teacher but I loved it

3. "Bad Cop - No Donut" a show from Canada detailing that week's police brutality in the US. Wrong on so many levels, and compulsive listening.

4. I'm battling my way through a 4-hour weekly show from Chicago called "This is Hell" - leftist chat and bizarre rants - informative and boring in equal measure, but you gotta love them yankees when they talk partisan politics.

If any of you have an iPod, I really recommend spoken-word podcasts as an occasional alternative to music.

Since then a lot of bits have gone over the ether and podcasting has really exploded.

I now use Google Reader as an online feed catcher - here are my subscriptions :

Me, I wonder ever more so about the workings of a mind that contains such matters.

Anyway, a tech question:

Am I just too paranoid, or does iTunes limit your bandwidth after a while if you only download free podcasts?

Will it zoom back up again if I buy an album?

Hey, to part answer my own question - I think the ISP or iTunes are throttling it back - I can download ver' fast using Juice.

The difficulty now comes when I want to transfer files from PC1 and PC2 to the iPod - I really don't understand all this gizmo stuff, it's typical IT instructiions dotting every i and crossing every t and then saying "you don't have to have an iPod to play them." Huh? I have one and it seems to have the data on it but it's invisible to the little beast and to me.

Anyone know the secret of running an iPod with 2 PCs and a third party file loader thingy?

I'm off to sunny Coldstream now for a day or two but I hope for a flood of techie babble upon my return.
