Ghostly messages

Post by rapunzell » 18 Apr 2006, 14:12

Last week I received the email prompt that I had a private message waiting for me here, but when I logged in there was nothing. Do any of the technological admins know what might have happened?..

Okay, now I'm getting messages but no email to say I've got them - is this just me?

Sorry Rapunzell, I don't know how to activate getting an e-mail when a pm arrives...thought it might be a tick box option on your Profile, but I can't see that as a choice :?

I thought it was the one in the profile "Notify me of pms" or whatever???

There's a further option for getting a pop-up.

Worth a try.

"Notify on new Private Message" option is for that, I think? But it's not exactly clear what that means. How typical of anything computerish!

I think it depends on if you are 98, 2000, XP etc? I used to get a pop-up box but now a wee finger - sometimes, but I've missed messages too.

I can't remember what I did to activate the email notification in the first place, but I know that I haven't done anything to reverse it since then : )

It used to work :D I'm more mystified about the message that I was told I had but either was POL software hallucinating, or it was eaten before I got there..

I sent a reply to a p.m. from Dada at 8:17 a.m. It's now 09:24 and it's still sitting in my outbox waiting to be transported across the ether

Rathbone, that just means that Dada has not opened it - when he does it will then appear in your sent mail!

It took me a while before I realized that was how it all worked - it's interesting to know if and when your PMs have been read!

It does take time to get to know some POL stuff. I recall that even although I had posted 2000 plus times, someone had to point out that the little white paper icon, after the poster's name, takes one direct to the post.

We're Wangiless at the moment Rapunzell, hence the silence on the techie front. No doubt he'll have the answer when he returns. In the meantime I can only guess that perhaps the sender deleted the pm in their outbox before you retrieved it?

Or that you got a delayed notification - you may have seen the pm before the notification arrived, as frequently happens to me.

I like this theory, and it would mean that there's nothing broken!
