I was talking to Craig Condie at the weekend and he was telling me that he is still playing football most saturday mornings, Joppa Quarry KO 11am. This event happens every saturday but some weeks Craig is unavailable.
He has been playing there at the same time since he was 15, which is around 30 years ago. I had forgotten about this porty phenomenon but its still going strong and I believe its more than 30 years. Does anyone know?
The game is an open invitation to anyone who wishes to turn up and is apparently played in true gentlemens spirt. One regular player is approaching his 80th birthhday and another nice feature has been the participation of families. There are numerous examples of fathers in their 40's playing in the same game with their 9 or 10 year old children. I'm sure if anyone fancies a game they would be welcome.
Apparently there is a Brazilian who plays regularly who as one would imagine is the best player by some distance.
Joppa Quarry Saturday Football
I used to be a regular participant as a schoolboy. I wonder if the near 80 year old is Charlie Gellatry, formerly minister at Portobello Baptist Church and who would regularly make the journey from his home in Hawick for a game at the Quarry Park!
I haven't been since before I went to university, probably early 1998. Back then, 11am on a Saturday morning was easy, but now I tend to find my Friday nights often put paid to any ideas for Saturday morning plans!
