Congratulations Kenny Anderson!

Post by Jamesie » 25 Mar 2006, 11:47

Fantastic news for Scotland and for Kenny Anderson, the former Portobello High School pupil winning Gold for Scotland in this morning's light heavyweight boxing final against Adura Olalehin of Nigeria.

The Nigerian initially gave Kenny a tough time but the Craigmillar ABC fighter fought through some difficult moments in the opening rounds to secure the victory.

Kenny was a couple of years below me at Porty and his brother, Benny, the year above and sister Maggie the year below.

Congratulations to all of them, and especially father-to-be Kenny - his wife is expecting anyday!

The last Scottish boxer to win Commonwealth Gold was Alex Arthur so Kenny no doubt has a bright professional future ahead of him.

Always great to hear of a Porty High success story! :D

I haven't watched any of the games until this morning when I sat down to watch some of the diving. When that finished the boxing came on and I nearly switched it off, but seeing as it was a Scot I carried on watching and am so glad I did. I didn't know of his Portobello connections.

Another of our gold medal winners (shooting), Sheena Sharp went to the same school as me in Huntly, she was a couple of years above me though so didn't know her well.

You could also add him to the business directory. He laid our oak flooring in the basement and made a wonderful job. In fact I would give him another gold medal for excellent craftsmanship. :D

I was playing tennis with his ex-teacher this morning. He was totally made up.

You must feel proud to have got Kenny on the floor MoM. :D

Aye well done Kenny, my entire block heard me shouting at the telly.
I'm sure I'm now entitled to an A.S.B.O. now...

I worked in Portobello youth club when Kenny, Benny and Maggie attended. I had an absolute ball getting to know the Anderson kids and the rest of the youngsters who were members at that time and it is no surprise to me that Kenny has gone on to become the star that he is. Working in a youth club is a great way to discard any prejudices you may have about the youth of today. If you can do this and treat young people as equals you will enjoy their company and win their respect.
Well done Kenny you are an inspiration to us all.
Prom cycling for all.
