George Best - sympathy going out

Post by Dadaist » 24 Nov 2005, 11:32

I would like to extend my sympathies to all of the members of the print and tv media who have been waiting, on/off, in the cold, for what seems like forever, outside George Best's hospital.

I am sure they wish for a speedy conclusion, and at this difficult time for them I would like to send my sympathies.

Well said. They are all desperately trying to get a shot of Georgie boy dribbling again.

Is he a blonde, magnet or what?

They shouldn't have to wait too much longer it seems.

I did have to cough in disbelief when they announced that he's donating his organs

He is a transplant legend - there are many people who have received George Best's organ.

Alex McLeish is thinking of taking him on loan.

In an infamous incident at the North Britisjh Hotel my brother had a sort of playfight with George Best he ended up on top of George pinning him to the floor. It was in the public bar.

I am fascinated with the fascination in his imminenet death. I don't really get it.

I do not think it was a waste of a liver to give it to George Best. Abused yes, but waste no.
If being perfect or 'better' than your neighbour is a pre-requisite of receiving medical care, then hospitals would be very empty places! 8)

I don't think anyone has said it was a waste of a liver. At the time he was offered it he said he wouldn't drink again. But Epykat is right - livers are at a real premium and you can't deny he could have treated the 2nd one better.

I could not agree more - I think it was disgraceful the way he treated his new liver, even although he probably meant it when he said that he would not drink again.
I view it in a similar light to the way that Doctors have to treat a lot of people who are suffering from smoke related diseases, many of whom continue to smoke afterwords. They should refuse to treat them and with the money they save, give me an annual MRI scan to catch anything I may early.
Justice delayed is justice denied.

Aye, being an alcoholic was so selfish of him,eh? The man had a disease, one that he couldnt control. He found himself living a life no-one on this message board could possibly comprehend-because he was exceptional at football- and drink was his escape.

Anyway, at times like these, it's not about how he could have spent his life better according to the rules of the portobello on-line community, it's about paying respect to someone who brought joy to many many people-a good few from the east side of Edinburgh.

RIP Bestie.[/quote]

There's no denying that continuing to drink after his transplant wasn't in his best interest but from what I understand he died, not because his new liver was irreparably damaged, rather his death was a result of numerous infections that transplant donees are very susceptible to due to the many drugs they have to take to prevent rejection of their transplanted organ.
Presumably this could have happened whether he chose to drink again or not.

Continued drinking + infections + already transplanted once before + anti-rejection medication == not suitable for re-use, afaik.

Good post Franck.

I don't think anyone was intentionally dissing Best. Epykat's got her opinions and she ain't gonna change them. It is the backbone of POL. :D

Yeah you said it. At least ours are up for scrutiny. This has got to be one of the few times I've agreed with Epy. It's a nice feeling.

It's frustrating that so many people who need one don't get a new liver, but I also agree with Franck that alcoholism is a disease rather than a lifestyle choice. If he had cancer and was given treatment to make it better and keep him alive longer, and the cancer came back, we might not be quite so judgemental. Just a thought.

Did find the media hype over the imminent death bizarre though, although perhaps not as bizarre as the quote from someone on the Today programme explaining why he was such a brilliant footballer. He said "He could do everything - he could do headers, and he could use both feet."  Wow.

I don't recall reading anywhere in the thread that alcoholism was a lifestyle choice.

Drink driving certainly represents a choice having been made though - a wrong one.

I was sad to learn of the demise of George Best, surely one of the greatest footballers, these Islands have ever produced, well
maybe after Jimmy Johnstone 8)

As already said, Alcoholism is a disease, I think ECM and Franck
summed up my own feelings admirably.

I can understand where Epy is coming from - my favourite sister
in law, has a liver condition, which will neccessitate a transplant some time in the future, she is not a drinker of alcohol.
However, I have been told that the Liver can regenerate itself :?:
I am not familiar with the procedures on this.

The regeneration thing is where the donor is living. Unlike kidneys (you've got 2, you can survive with just one but once you donate it you don't grow a new one) livers regenerate a bit. They are also separated into 2 lobes and you can donate one while you're still alive - current medical controversy.
