Folks,
First post here - I'm looking for some help. I need to find some resources for Porty and Joppa history, both general stuff and more specifically the large houses down the promenade from Hamilton House Nursery to Dalriada - when they were built, owners, original uses (were they domestic residences just?) etc, etc.
Anyone any ideas where to start? Any online or book resource ideas welcome. Is my best bet Porty library?
Cheers,
A78
some historical help...
Hi A78 and welcome,
You could try here . http://www.ros.gov.uk/
You will have to pay a search fee but will be able to find out when properties were built (first sold anyway) and the names of the owners.
There was a thread some time ago on here that I think linked to census info for the Portobello area and covered dates in the nineteenth century. That might be of interest. I'll see if I can find it.
