MARCH OF THE SCARY SPIDERS
SCOTLAND is being invaded by foreign spiders.
New strains of arachnids that were once only found in exotic countries have been creeping north of the Border as temperatures rise.
Experts warned an aggressive creepy-crawly called a false black widow, known to rush at people who get too close, is on its way.
Dark-coloured with a 10mm long body, it comes from the Canary Islands and Madeira and has been brought into the country via banana imports.
They also believe that a black and yellow species, called the wasp spider, will soon be scuttling into Scotland.
Alastair Lavery, head of education at the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, warned people to be careful of the invaders.
He added: "With most spiders, you have to work hard to get them to bite you - pick them up, carry them around or pull their legs off.
"But the false black widow will rush people. It is aggressive and has established quite a reputation for snapping at people who come too close."
He added: "The expansion of breeds has been quite rapid. If the predicted temperature trends continue, these kind of spiders will soon arrive.
"Spiders should be admired and enjoyed. They eat midges and will consume around half of the insects where they live
