Sand Sculptures

Post by Dadaist » 06 Aug 2005, 08:49

I saw a flier the other day saying that people will be doing sand sculptures on Porty beach all this weekend, and next weekend. Has anyone else heard of this? There was a map on the flier which indicated the beach area at the bottom of Bath St, and it said they would be there "all day".

The photos on the flier certainly make me want to head down and see not only the finished product, but also how on earth they do it!

How come our What's On editor hasn't heard of this then?

I saw some pretty impressive sand sculptures a couple of weeks ago in Cannes. In the baking sun there were guys building huge perfect pyramids and other really intricate designs in the hope that appreciative tourists would leave them a euro or two.

As Lee is away this weekend, maybe someone else could post some pics?

A guy used to do sand sculptures on the part of the beach between Bath street and Bellfield street in the early Eightys (Maybe Late Seventys!) out favourite were great big pyramids and shapes that he made a track that he would roll a golfball down which would go through tunnels and round curves until it reached the end. kinda neat! :D

Buddha on the beach

Post by Alastair » 07 Aug 2005, 20:54

Did anyone get a photo of the amazing laughing Buddha sand sculpture on the beach at the foot of James Street on Saturday evening (6 Aug)?

It was beautiful in every detail - someone said it had been done by a couple of guys from the Czech Republic that afternoon. By the time I went home for a camera and got back (about 11pm), some dafties had jumped on it.

Obviously it was ephemeral, but it would have been good if it had lasted a bit longer.

Porty is great for the unexpected.

And by the way, isn't it great to see the end of the line of gibbets at the Paddy. Looking forward to seeing how it develops.

Such a shame we don't seem to have a photo - when Wangi finds out that on the one weekend he was away from the beach they were doing sand sculptures, he'll be furious.

*somebody* must have taken a snap ...

Alistair, I merged your thread with the previous one on this topic.

I spotted the buddha this afternoon. One of the guys had re-built it. We had a bit of a language barrier so I didn't get much else out of him and unfortunately I didn't have my camera either. Wangi will be kicking himself as he missed both this and the beach volleyball - great photo opportunities on what turned out to be a beautiful afternoon in Porty.

No sign of any other sculptures though, unless there were more yesterday?

The fiery mouth of the dragon is a nice touch. The guys were still pottering away down on the sand as we went past a wee while back.

Hope the sculptures survive the night at least. They really are fantastic.

They are amazing, watched them for a while tonight as they were still working on the dragon. I really hope they are still intact in the morning.

THEIR sculptures of monsters and motor cars delighted thousands of visitors to Portobello beach.

Now the sand artists who created giant dragons on the Capital's sands are to make a special Portobello sculpture.

Update - weather forecast is poor for this weekend, so the sculpture has been postponed until next Sunday.

Thanks for letting us know Bob.

Was along the prom this afternoon and was looking out for the guys and hoping the rain would stay away.
Fingers crossed the weather will be brighter next weekend.
Can't wait to see what they come up with.

Just had a call from Antia. She's on Portobello beach right now and work on the sculpture is under way. I'm on my way down right now - hope to see some of you there.

wangi - are you around to get some decent shots?

Nice to see some POL people admiring the sculpture today. I ran into Marya, Dakota, wangi, Hell's Cat and mr magnolia in the time I was there.

Tom Smith, the vice chair of Portobello Community Council, popped down to hand over a cheque for £50 to Martin and Antia, who have been working on the sculpture since around 7am. They had completed the Poseidon figure and were working on a shark when I left them. Unfortunately, they are working in the shade now and it was starting to get a bit chilly.

I've got lots of photos, video and vox pop reaction from people on the Prom. Hope to get some of it up later tonight.

Speaking to the sculptors earlier, they have no pretensions at all about being 'artists'. They are just doing what they enjoy and are grateful for the odd pound or two that people leave for them. There have been large groups of people all day admiring the work and I'm delighted that PCC agreed to commission this work, which has given so many people so much pleasure.

They plan to be down there until at least 9pm so if you haven't already been, please take a walk along to admire their work and offer them some encouragement.

Bob we managed to get along after we met you this morning, the shark is brilliant chasing the baby fish. Very impressive.

Also spotted a POL t-shirt wearer but we didn't splasoosh as we didn't know who he was.

Sandra, there are very few people who own POL t-shirts and even fewer who are brave enough to wear them in broad daylight. I'm guessing that the person you saw was my good friend Nick Stroud, the CC secretary, who lives nearby and has been supplying our sculptor friends with endless cups of coffee.

I'm going to head back down soon to see the finished work and get a few more pics.

We had a walk along this afternoon and saw the first sculpture being completed, unfortunately didn't get a chance to see the shark.
Pity they couldn't do one every week-end.
