The A-Team, Star Wars, and respect for authority

Post by Dadaist » 08 Jul 2005, 18:48

Many of you will recall this highly irresponsible children's programming from the 1980s :

Image

"In 1972 a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the A-Team."

As a parent I am shocked at this blatant disregard for authority and the lack of moral values protrayed in this garbage. Let me explain :

1. A military court does not make mistakes, so these soldiers were obviously in dereliction of duty. Any innocence on the part of any members of their group was wiped out when they escaped from prison - a crime in itself. By not handing themselves in as soon as they escaped they committed yet another crime. Are these men role models for our young? I think not.

2. They survive as soldiers of fortune, also known as mercenaries or paramilitaries. Children should be taught that the only place to go if you have a problem is an officer of the law, a parent or a teacher.

3. One of the characters is a lunatic who resides in a secure psychiatric unit. As if being convicts and hoodlums isn't enough, breaking this man out of his care without medical consent is obviously a crime.

This violent programme clearly has no place in our modern society, and carries dangerous messages of subversion. It advocates evils such as cigar smoking and the wearing of gold "bling". Characters regularly revert to fisticuffs, gunplay and unauthorised (and untaxed) modification of motor vehicles.

I suggest all of you should have the sufficient moral fibre to avoid this programme.

As a parent I am shocked at this blatant disregard for authority and the lack of moral values protrayed in this garbage. Let me explain :

1. Righteous authority in this film takes the form of a Galactic Empire, with an Emperor ruling at its head. Whilst the film could have detailed his efficient running of the domain it instead focuses on a group of terrorists.

2. The terrorists in this film not only illegally rescue one of their leaders from necessary incarceration, they proceed to destroy a government building which is engaged in important state anti-terror operations. This shameful behaviour results in the terrorists even awarding themselves medals.

3. One of the characters is a bearded religious fundamentalist who lives in a rocky desert. He provides non-Christian guidance to the terrorist gang and encourages them to commit violent acts.

This violent film clearly has no place in our modern society, and carries dangerous messages of subversion. It advocates evils such as impersonating a state trooper and leaving a family home before essential farm work has been completed. Characters regularly revert to fisticuffs, gunplay and hiding from state officials.

I suggest all of you should have the sufficient moral fibre to avoid this programme.

God I hope your joking

Have been watching the A Team on UK TV Gold all week. Brilliant memories of Saturday tea time when I was about 5. Still not sure how the managed to recycle the same plot every week though.

Bring that back! I loved it.

I found the space battles and laser gun fights quite funny.
A bit like Prisoner Cell Block H, with wobbly sets and dodgy effects.
Except based in space!

Still good though.

And roll those loaded dice
Bring on the dancing girls,
And put the champagne on ice"

Well done Dadaist, for years now I have been worried about the effect of these films on our youngsters. Might I suggest that you share this film with your children to counteract the negative messages they receive:

Image

1. It explores the wonderful form of the human body and challenges the oppressive role that clothes play in our society. It teaches children that we are all one and equal in our nakedness.

2. A woman plays the lead role – a significant departure from the usual Hollywood fare that reinforces the premise that women are secondary to men. This film demonstrates that young, attractive, intelligent women do not have to play second fiddle to ageing Hollywood male actors.

3. No violence whatsoever – just peace, love and understanding.

Get it on the video player now Mums and Dads!

I don't know if you've seen the Chuck Norris Facts floating about - well they reached Chuck Norris and his website has a response to them!

If I get a minute I will post links.

I'm a bit disappointed at his reasonable response.

I expected nothing short of a roundhouse kick to the butts of the fact list perpetrators.
