£50 a Cigarette?
On Thursday a friend of mine was enjoying the sun and a smoke while sitting on the public bench outside the Deli. After stubbing her cigarette on the ground she was fined £50 for littering. The evidence was captured on mobile CCTV, which was in a van parked nearby.
What do you all think of this one then?

Justice delayed is justice denied.
I think it's fair enough
I don't think anyone has the right to litter and smokers are the worst culprits. If it's not fag ends, its their fag packets or the wrapping from them chucked on the ground or out their car windows
No offence intended to smoking POLers..I'm sure you're all very careful not to litter

Many countries manage their liitter so much better than us. I recently sat next to a Japanese guy, now married to a Scot. I asked him what did he see as the biggest difference in our cultures? He replied that although he has lived in Glasgow for 3 years he is still amazed every time he sees people paid to sweep litter of the streets. It doesn't happen in Japan and apparently the school children clean their own schools.
No ashtrays is not an excuse for littering. Stub it out and take it home in your pocket.

I don't know if its true, but I was speaking to a well travelled man who told me in Singapore you face a £1000 fine if you litter and their streets are spotless.

I do feel some sympathy as there are people who drop a lot worse than cigarette ends and seem to always get away with it but it's still litter I suppose. High time they were catching more people for letting their dogs foul the pavements(and Prom etc.) in my view.Makes you feel guilty having a dog yourself even when you clean up.
I think it's absolutely right that people should be fined for it. Cig butts are toxic and can kill animals, birds, and small children.

If people were throwing down paracetamol tabs or something other potentially poisonous drug, it wouldn't be thought unreasonable to fine them, and litter is litter.

All I really need is love, but a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt!
