Hats off to the following members, who all provided the correct solution:
mr magnolia
Dadaist
Ed
MrSpoon
Marya
paulw
teddygirl
CatzVP
It's an intriguing puzzle, in that at first sight it would appear that none of the men has sufficient information to deduce the colour of his own hat.
The solution is C. He can see that B is wearing a white hat. He also knows that D must be aware of this fact. If C were also wearing a white hat then by a process of elimination D would know that he must have a black hat. D's silence can mean only one thing - that he sees one white hat (B) and one black hat (C).
