Free Satellite Image of Porty ;)

Post by CatzVP » 09 Feb 2005, 18:19

I have a new download of a colour satellite image that goes as far west as Meadowbank, East to Mussy race coarse, and South to about 1 click south of the Fort (So it pretty much covers anyone in Portobello of Musselburgh)

2 sizes are available

7 meg and 20 meg

7 meg (2 meter/pixel resolution) (3628 x 2446) Print size 130cm x 87cm
20 meg (1 meter/pixel resolution) (7242 x 4896) Print size 256cm x 173cm

Both have very good zoom in properties and you can make out depth of a car being about 2-3 pixels

If you require a copy PM me by Friday with Size and Email addy (obviously!)

If you have Photoshop get the 7meg version and blow up 200% with Bicubic instead of downloading the 20meg version (Please make sure your email can handle a file 20meg.....Most max at 10 meg)

Would you like me to upload them, and give everyone a link they can download from?

Or, if you know what you're doing, I can give you an ftp address and login details?

Thanks Catz. I already had a copy of the Edinburgh Photographic Atlas from getmapping.com but it's handy to have a digital map and I think we could make good use of it to help illustrate points on the forum.

As an example, I have been thinking recently about the possibility of a combined basketball/5 a side football arena for Portobello and looking at Joppa Quarry Park, a large and virtually featureless green space, it looks like the ideal location. Or maybe a skateboard park? Or maybe both?

Here we go!

http://www.tastyspoon.com/martins/Porto ... gnbold.jpg - Big (20mb) version
http://www.tastyspoon.com/martins/Portobellosmall.jpg - Small (7mb) version

I recommend you right-click the links and 'save as' rather than just viewing them in your web browser!

Probably problems with the site, well especially re the skatepark idea. The favourite option for the citywide park was St Mark's Park at Powderhall, but it was found to be unsuitable (at a late point) due to previous use of the site for rubbish infill. Now given the history of this site - a quarry - I guess this would be a concern too (out of interest load the image into an editor and ramp up teh contrast - see all those markings on the ground)?

And remember the site is split level. The bottom half is regularly full of kids playing footy anyways.

have I missed the spelling issue? or is it Marya's?

And of course it's complicated by the fact that at key parts of the song he sings it as 'saterllite'....
