Bins

Post by wangi » 11 Jan 2005, 19:57

I wonder - did I miss something, or is the fact that my wheely bin is still on the pavement chock-full of 3 weeks rubbish down to a cooncil cockup?

Hmm.

What I read in the Evening News last week was that they are not emptying them in this windy weather in case they blow away! Could be in for a long wait...

Well, they were out emptying the bins in Bellfield Lane earlier today, wind or no wind!
For what it's worth Wangi last week they were being collected a day later than normal - just the seasonal backlog I'd suspect.

The not-emptying-because-of-wind ( )was just for communal bins, but there have been wildcat strikes or something - well, one, at least, which for some reason has screwed up the whole system. I must say I've never lived anywhere where a council has been so totally inept at dealing with refuse! Ours weren't emptied when they should have been after Christmas, then were emptied last week, and haven't been today.

Were they on the North Bridge or was that Patrick Thomson's?

I wrote to the council last year about it and they quite litterally refused to answer. I ended up down in the dumps.

Yep thats usually right Poppy, but haven't I just said you were the lucky one
One time we even had to wait up to 3 weeks for a special uplift.
A word of warning to you, make sure whatever it is you are getting rid off (Hope its not EL P   ) is definitely right on the pavement, we dared to put our couch for uplift approximately a foot from the pavement and they refused to take it away :? , apparently the bin men were not capable of taking the two steps further to pick it up

Not El P!! Thanks for warning, but have had a special uplift before at this address and it worked OK so will use exactly the same spot! It's tricky though as the pavement is very narrow in places and it's a double bed I'm ditching!!

Well, don't know if ours was full or not (not really into bin inspection!) but it was lying all dead looking in the road this morning. Some kind person must have picked it up though coz it was okay when I got home :)
(this sounds like the kind of totally uninteresting nonsense that old women write into the Evening News  )

My wheelie bin has been in the street since last Wednesday complete with Christmas Tree which I have now retrieved from other people's gardens and driveways about 5 times. Not even sure if its my tree

Wednesday has now come and gone again and still no sign of the bin-men

What is going on, its the 12th of the month...surely they should have caught up by now

It's honestly more news worthy than most articles in The Metro (that is rubbish).

Oh no, I love the Metro (which is strange considering I walk to work - I borrow somebody else's!) I think it's just so full of inane junk that it's light relief from other more serious things :D

Back to the thread, here's a copy of Maureen Child's email on the subject:
Dear All

I had complaints from a number of you about this. Our refuse collection has been erratic over the last couple of weeks. This is partly due to unofficial action by some of the refuse collection crews on Friday 31 December, which lasted about a week.

Following negotiations with the refuse crews, they were working normally by 6 January, but there was a backlog of refuse on some routes which will take some time to clear. That included some of Milton ward. We all hoped the routes would all be back to normal by Sunday 9 January, then came the bad weather which made it dangerous for crews to work some days.
The Council is recommending that you put you put your refuse out on the normal collection day and they will uplift it as soon as they possibly can. Mine has been 24 hours late, last week and this - and it got blown over. I gather there are still problems with collection in some neighbourhoods, and I have asked the Director to predict when these will be finally resolved and running smoothly.

One or two people are also a bit bemused as to when the collection date is for their properties now, since the route changes. I have asked the Director to give me a list so I can advise you if you don't know for sure.

Please tell me if these problems persist or any others problems arise.

Maureen

I might go on Dragon's Den next week with my invention to stop Bins blowing over in the wind.

Its a system involving lead weights that don't add weight to the bin when it is being moved but do when it is still. I tested it the other night and it seems to work well. I need a name for it......

I believe you mean Ted. Jim was darts.

Marya, Im not back on the beer yet, maybe tonight. We will see. ECM I do remember Weebles. Weeble Wheelies has a bit of a ring about it. I was tending more to Bin Leaden and making something along those lines.

In all seriousness, how many of you, when puttng your Bins out, turn the Handles towards the direction the wind is coming from? This reduces the chance of the "Lid" becoming a sort of wind sail and thereby reduces the risk of topple.
