Promenading on the Esplanade

So,

why does Portobello have a Promenade AND an Esplanade?

my dictionary seems to suggest that they are the same thing but horses are involved in an Esplanade.

Any beach bums out there help out?

It's obviously because the Esplanade is at the Joppa end where they can afford to own horses and the Promenade is at the other end where we can only afford Shanks' Pony. :)
