I have to do a little reprise on the opinion poll debate. One circumstance when opinion polls could be seen to be prime facie evidence is when the subject that needs to be evidenced is; public opinion. As in this case.
Yes definitely, as I found out when I tried to find out if our torture poll result was oddball and found that it matched US public opinion on torture directly after 9/11.

Wow, I'm really confused now. The one I wrote at 4.22 was hurried just before I left the office so it might be that one which is wrong.

Either way, you're quite right - one of the two is rubbish, so I was therefore incorrect myself, wrong for saying you are incorrect if it's the second one, and on a holistic level grossly unqualified to try and point out minor cosmetic inconsistency in your posts where mine can become confused in the space of 79 minutes.
Whatever , just don't do it again buddy.
I want a public inquiry. This is a resignation issue.

Brilliantly engineered Porty - here's our big chance!

EDIT - whoops, sorry - that was supposed to be a pm.

In all seriousness, I am not surprised in the least.

Are there more recent polls available? Would be interesting to make a comparison.

It's ok, it's not the first or the last time I have looked like a complete buffoon - on Saturday I punctured (badly) the tyre on my driving instructor's car whilst pulling to the side of the road to take off my jumper, leaving her to drive on a wheel rim to Kwik Fit and me to walk home.

I had left my house keys in her car and was therefore locked out of the house - I tried to break in by going round the back and sticking my hand in the cat flap to reach the back door key, failed miserably, but didn't know that BB had actually got back home by then (I hadn't even bothered to try the front door, which was open) and thought there was somebody trying to break in.

Once BB had stopped laughing at me, I sort of found the whole thing funny.

I *was* surprised, and very saddened. It would be nice if said opinion had changed, but it's too late now for a lot of people who got bombed into dust for reasons of revenge.

That story is as nothing compared to the Burns Supper story, which I have never told anybody, not even BB.

I just told it to BB, and she is laughing so much she says she is going to have to go and pee. She actually has gone to pee now.

I was about to go to bed but I'm willing to stay up another ten minutes if you promise to post it.

Alternatively, we could torture you into confessing live on Radio Free Porty.

I'll type it in, it can have its own thread. It can be a tribute to the day Porty kicked one of my "arguments" between the posts, Wilkinson-style.

Well at least it's only cocoa for your monitor.

Could be much worse for mine if Dadaist's story is as good as he says.

Porty

Thinking back, even though I know you're bored, I think I can see the original error of mine from which the other errors spiralled.

My original statement was wrong - I shouldn't have said "by the time I posted my reply you had edited your response". That was what was incorrect. I think it's happened to me in the past though but obviously not this time, as my entire response was to the edited post of yours and concerned the military.

So both the things you highlighted are mistaken!

I did get on my high horse for sure, but I really think that putting a note as to what the edit was on an edited post makes sense - if anything it's a note to yourself, but also makes things clearer to others, who, like me, may be suffering from confusion to start with.

Excellent spot and yes I was thinking "how terrible" when i heard about it on the news this morning. There are differences, like 7 day judicial reviews but its not tha far away from what could and no doubt will happen here.

BTW does the 28 day law still include the 7 day judicial reviews?

While I'm not used to reading parliamentary bills, it does appear to. How much of a safeguard that is, I'm not sure

Did anyone also think it was a bit hypocritical of Jack Straw etc to say what an appalling act bombing a wedding party was - recent bombings in Jordan - when a) UK/USA forces bombed as far as I can remember at least one wedding party in Afghanistan and b) UK/USA gov's have in any case bombed and massacred a helluva lot of ordinary civilians in Afghanistan and Iraq, and do so day by day.....?

Hypocritical is too small a word. Mendacity seems more to the mark.

Note that the atrocity is attributed to the arab pimpernel, Al-Zarqawi, he managed to do this while single handedly pinning down 150,000 odd occupation forces in Iraq. Does this man ever take a day off?

I honestly couldn't be sure. As far as I know there is even a huge questiion mark over the existence of Al Quaeda or rather it started as a figment and came into existence but only after 9/11.

One day I must share my phoning the FBI story, which I did on the Sunday after 9/11. Weird but interesting.
