Marya wrote:What do you hope to achieve by belittling posters in this way Dadaist?

Is it to;
a) help posters improve their spelling
or
b) just air your irritation?

If the answer is a) then you will be sadly disappointed for a variety of reasons.
Spelling is most often "caught" rather than merely "taught".
Adults will find it extremely difficult to alter habits of decades. Some posters may be dyslexic and many others will not have a spell check facility on their browser. Not all of us are touchtypists and in a rush to post may make simple keyboard errors. Further more, a fair few of us may want to respond quickly to a thread and in so doing make errors which normally we would spot. And then again there are all those posts made in the wee sma' hours when a "tired and emotional" state of affairs influences our writing.
If you want to aid Adults to learn to spell better then offer your services to Community Education.

On the other hand, if it is answer b) to air your irritation , then you have done so on several occasions so far on this Forum.

Ultimately, all you will achieve is deterring users from posting by making them embarrassed and self-conscious, worried that some smart Aleck is going to come along and berate them for a perceived lack of literary skills.
My comments are aimed at a very small minority of posters who, in my opinion, should know better and are simply being lazy. They also know exactly the spirit in which to take my posts and are well aware that I am the first person I usually take the proverbial out of.

I do however compliment you on the structure of your critique and use of rhetoric - but I will not be attempting to analyse sentences like "If you want to aid Adults to learn to spell better" even though they are the ironic equivalent of a large red bullseye.

I'm glad that my beration did not deter your oration on my irritation.

I cried myself to sleep last night over this...

Anyway, I'll not be spending any time worrying about spelling - I've got better things to do and this is a forum about Portobello, not the "English Language".

OK Dadaist I surrender. Not a single other person seems bothered about your criticisms of the standard of spelling in Forum posts. I suppose as I spend every working hour red pen in hand correcting weak spelling who am I to withhold that pleasure from you? Let them have it

Gracefully surrendered, Marya. And very restrained. After all...

I think it's called not taking the bait as you find out that the bait leads to nowhere - therefore the whole experience is meaningless. However, you did take tha bait with particular style and eloquence :D and I was greatly impressed just quietly watching!

I stand corrected. I must remember to get off my goat. The two of us were high up on a pedestal but seem to have been knocked down a peg or two. It's better that I get my head out of the clouds and get my finger out of my wick.

dada

I think you should attack on two fronts - go for Porty's signature spelling, just for fun.

What do you make of my new signature? Quite a good message to send out to the infrequent user, don't you think?
