He must be baffled as he normally adds two and two together and gets 37.
Whereas it doesn't matter what Porty adds - he always gets 20%

Dada, I don't think Rachel Corrie was an accident, especially when one examines the photos. My point was Israeli bulldozers are accurate.

You have in the past taken me to task for appearing to avoid addressing some direct questions. May I invite you to comment on who Tommy was thinking of when he made this comparison with himself?

How do you know it was a comparison with himself? The book was co-written with Alan McCombes for starters. Tommy is an internationalist, so it's not just the SSP he might be referring to, but the entire global movement.

So rather than it being a comparison of one individual to one or more others, is it not merely a pointed (and in my opinion, correct) statement that progressive movements or individuals with foresight have in a lot of cases become famous not only for what they achieved, but for the obstacles they overcame?

The quote isn't from a book its from a Scotsman interview. He is talking about the SSP rather than just himself, to most people its one and the same thing.

"What would you say to your critics who claim that the SSP is home simply to a protest vote from those yearning for a mythical socialist past.
John Monaghan

I think psephologically speaking it's complete and utter nonsense. Those who vote SSP stay SSP voters. Those who vote SSP are more likely to join us than any other political party because we're an activist based party. In other words, people don't vote SSP because they want to protest. They vote SSP because they want to change the world.

Those who have wanted to change the world throughout history have always been scoffed at but they've always been right in the long run. "

Once again, who or what is he referring to? And with the exception of the "scoffing" bit can whatever he is referring to be reasonably compared?

Given his historic and political roots - most probably the UK Labour and Trades Union movement - which as a former member of Militant he is most closely associated with.

The more subtle point, to my mind, is that the comparison is with anyone who has felt forced to take action against something they perceived to be injust - of which there are many more examples but again in his context could refer to CND, the poll tax movement or the fight against Bush and Blair's wars.

But movements don't have to be so high profile - I would be happy to include a fight to save free school meals in the list.

And to think that the most immediate conclusion which you drew was that Tommy admired Hitler.

Im not biting. I only used Hitler to disprove Tommy's facile statement.

However, lets compare Tam with Hitler or Clinton Bush or Stalin or Churchill or Clough ot Gorbachov or Ceaucesceau or Stein or Smith (Walter) or McGahgey or Scargill or Salmond or Bremner or Thorpe or Smith (Ian) etc. One significant difference from Tam and all of the above is; when his wife got pregnant he jacked it in.

Dada, the guy doesn't have the substance to handle being a Dad to be and a leader of an organisation that has less than 10 staff. What other area of life would he deemed to be succesful? His wife is not ill she is pregnant.

Mind you, Tommy didn't used to need his wife's pregnancy as a reason for not going to work, he only managed to make it 62% of the time during the last session. He may not be a t osser but I'm afraid, on the publicly available evidence, that's how he conducts himself.

Are you going to be voting this weekend then Dadaist? I spent Thu night in the company of Colin Fox's campaign manager. We all gathered round the tele to watch her being interviewed on 'Politics Now' about the leadership contest, only for the screen to freeze. When the reception returned we had missed her interview entirely

No. I hope it's Colin, but when you read the statements they made I'm glad to not be there - it looks bitter.

This weekend I'm working overtime, having a driving lesson, spending time with the girls and visiting our friend's new baby.

I guess if I got nostalgic for an SSP conference I could always cheer myself up by watching "The Life Of Brian".

I rest my case.
Last night on Newsnight Tommy announced that "Its a marathon not a sprint" . Surely its a snickers?

Nah, I don't think Tommy would have the energy for me and Susan Deacon at the same time. How about You, Rosie Kane and Jack and I could go and make a cup of tea since I'm really not interested in what you get up to in your spare time?
