Favourite takeaway

I'm a confirmed meat eater so my recommendations are second-hand, but I have veggie friends who eat regularly at St Andrews Restaurant, and the Blue Bean cafe.

The new Pizza Hut (takeaway only) has good veggie options, but has encountered some opposition on the forum because of concerns about global multinationals driving locally-owned businesses out of business.

Welcome to Porty when you arrive! Sorry I didn't reply sooner.

Yes, welcome Mr & Mrs Magnolia! :sunny: Sorry, don't really do veggie personally but have you ever tried seagull? (we have a bit of a glut of them at the moment  )

Thanks for the suggestion, but I've always thought there was something a bit fishy about seagulls...

We are all looking forward to the move although it won't really be very far - if the car breaks down on the critical day we will hop on a No 15 at Tollcross and get off at Abercorn Park (assuming it is called Abercorn Park?)

A shame there is no unexpected gem serving unusual veggie nosh - I was hoping we might find a seaside equivalent to Chans, that used to be on Forth Street, where the Tapas Tree is now. We've all missed it since they went back to Hong Kong. We've lived reasonably for the last 8 yrs off the options available at The Peking Inn, The Bangalore and Efes- Tollcross' finest! I suppose we could always go back to cooking......

Why is it that the St Andrew's restaurant is constantly advertising for staff?

Over the last five years they must have had quite a turnover in waiters. I've even considered working there myself to find out how bad it must be, and so that there isn't a dayglo sign in the window for a while.

It would be like "Macintyre undercover".

I've seen dimly lit restaurants in my time, but they are really pushing it there.....

Back to one of my favourite topics - food! I had a lunch date with Mrs Bob on Friday. We decided to try the business lunch at the Dragon Way. Mrs B chose spare ribs as a starter (no complaints), while I opted for the sesame prawn toast. Now, this is a dish that can either be incredibly good or incredibly bad. This was simply inedible. I returned it and chose instead the cripsy won ton, which was OK. My Duck Kon Siu was slightly better, although I seemed to have been given my portion of duck fat and someone else's. Mrs B's Chicken with Beansprouts was rather tasteless and she was soon pinching some of my sauce in a bid to enliven it.

So, food rather disappointing but my main gripe is the service. Neither of the waitresses seemed to know how to smile and at times bordered on surly. We won't be back.

Now, if only the 108 had a sit-down restaurant.

Dont know if anyone else has mentioned Mr India (top of Duddingston Park)? I urge you to try the Chicken Shaslik,it is truly scrummy. Comes with Rice and roasted vegetables, at £9.95 is easily enough for 2. A word of advice, its def best to call and order as they make the stuff fresh.0131 657 9988. If you dont enjoy, feel free to blame me and for the avoidance of doubt I have no financialor family interest in the place.

Bob- I've given the Dragon Way the old bums rush after a rather disasterous attempt to have a meal there on Valentine's Day. However, I know that Dadaist has sampled their takeway lunch special (only costs a few quid) and enjoyed it

We called in the night before our holiday, just because we were starving and had no food in the house, and the food was fine but the TV was drowning out our conversation, and I can't stand TV being on in a restaurant. It tends to be our last resort place.

No-one has mentioned Carlo's on the High Street. When I first came to live here, there was not a good chippie - horror of horrors - then Carlo's opened and saved my life. On a bitterly cold winter's night, their delivery service is a godsend, and their staff are always friendly. They also do wonderful pizzas - to my taste, anyhow. And they have all sorts of other dishes you can try.

I used to be a devote of the Chi Wai, but have not been along there for a while, and am somewhat perturbed to hear that it is under new ownership ......... Especially as I will have to think of places to feed visitors, now summer is here. Any suggestions, other than 'The Old Pier' and the St. Andrew. (I also had a fairly disastrous meal in the St. Andrew about five years ago.)

As a semi-veggie - I eat fish - I have never found any trouble getting dishes without meat in them in Porty, and I do agree that Findlay's veggie haggis is superb.

PS What a good suggestion that we put in links to those eateries and take-aways that have websites - then someone can go round and try them out and recommend them. It's the kind of information visitors would like on the Poty site

Another vote for Mr India - we have enjoyed a few deliveries from there and enjoy savouring different tastes rather than merely different multicoloured hues of the same nondescript stuff.

Dragon Way have been responsible for the worst eat-in meal I have ever had - no matter what we ordered it tasted like cornflour. And then, confusingly, delivered a really nice takeaway just the other week, thus averting a domestic as I was giving the other half a roasting for even putting income their way again.

We've really enjoyed a couple of take-aways from Spices recently.
Their starter portions are huge!
Everything is freshly made so you may wait 15 mins or so for your order but it's well worth it.
Word of warning though - the Seekh kebab is very hot/spicy compared to any other place I've tried but then I'm a Korma kind of person!

I am quite surprised at all the comments about Dragon Way. That is our nearest takeaway and we use it quite alot. The food has always been excellent, although that may be because we always order the same 2 dishes! And the portions are massive, which is always a bonus. We always go there for takeaway when we have friends staying over, and they have never complained either. We have never tried the restaurant, but presume that if we like the takeaways then we would like the food in there too.

Mmmm chicken in plum sauce.....!

I think the "Seaview" in the High Street is worth a mention. I much prefer it to "Sesame".
I have only tried the Dragon Way once. OK, but not worth the walk when the Seaview is closer.
Carlo's is also v. good for fish and chips. I celebrated my move to Porty with champagne and a fish supper from the St Andrews as I thought it was regarded as an institution. The second supper a few weeks later was not so good. The chips tasted like they had been hanging around far too long. I've not been back. It's Carlo's every time, now.

Correct. You win a can of diet coke.

Sounds like Dragon No Way would be more appropriate.

I wandered in there once, well after its closing time (it was a warm night, and the doors were open) and cheekily asked for a portion of Singapore noodles. Delighted to report that after they got over their surprise, they got the wok out for me!

It was wonderful.

I was tired and emotional at the time -- but I still recommend it.

We've just had our first carry out meal from Mr India. Our order arrived 90 minutes after we phoned (45 mins late) and I can honestly say I don't remember having had a worse Indian meal. Both our dishes were saturated in salt, the rice was bland and the 'spicey potatoes' lacked spice. :? Perhaps we got them on a bad night. I'd like to think so.

I miss Datta!

I miss it too, DG. We've had some nice stuff from Spices since the demise of the Datta and I still love the food from the Shahi Manzil on Willowbrae Road.

Could have been. We may try again as we have only heard good things about the food. I've had to drink loads of beer in an attempt to cope with the salt! Really!

We used to love shahi manzil but found they were getting very watery and less flavoursome (Ooh, did I really just use that word for the first - and last - time in my life?).

I haven't had my usual (Chicken Tikka Korma) for ages - I'll be so disappointed if it's gone watery and that other word!

Sorry Porty! - Our favourite local restaurant is the Lanna Thai opposite the Brunton Hall. A lovely place with two equally lovely Thai ladies waiting at table. The food is great and includes vegie starters and main courses. The take-away food is just as good, though you have to collect it. Phone no. 653 2788.
