Lovely photos, Hell's Cat. Although you look a bit uncertain at being put on the obelisk for the photo! I'd forgotten about bows! (It's age, you know - the memory isn't what it was!) My main memory of them is that they always used to slip out of your hair and get lost - or, of course, little boys used to pull 'em! Your coat looks just like mine at that age, so I guess we must be about the same age.

Well now - The one on Arthur Seat was probably taken about 1960 - so methinks with a bit of Arithmetic my age is now advertised to the world :?
And it was always a red ribbon!

Wasn't there a song about red ribbons? I seem to remember I had some yellow ones as well.

There's "Tie a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree" by I can't remember who and Harry Belafonte (I think) sang about scarlet ribbons.

My Mum used to pull my hair back so tightly that I could hardly blink! And then, when you took the elastic band out at night your hair was sore!

Tie a yellow Ribbon was by "Dawn", I think. Got to number one in the charts. :D

I was lucky - my Mam just used to put the ribbon in a lock of hair for decorative effect, not to tie it back and no elastic was used - which is probably why they all kept sliding out! What WAS painful was when they got pulled out and took a hank of hair with them!

'Tie a Yellow Ribbon' has to have been the summer of '74, as it was constantly on the radio when I was working in the hotel kitchen!

I had totally forgotten 'Scarlet Ribbons' until Mimpty mentioned it, and then dee ay em en it, the thing instantly came back to me, and I could not get it out of my head all day! I even found myself whistling it at work!

Moving away from ribbons...did anyone ever have their hair wrapped/tied with cotton strips to make ringlets? My hair was pulled so tight it was agony and hell to sleep in.

Oh, and there is a song called "My mother bade me bind my hair" which may be by Handel.

  I was forced to do highland dancing. Grandmother obviously felt it would look good. I hated it.
I have a picture of me standing outside Porty Town Hall in my all gear but you can't see much of the area due to parked cars. Was going to get someone to scan it for me but thought it might look like showing off.

I think you all look sweet and it's not at all helpful for spladooshing. I walked past DG and Bob on the Marlborough st. clean up and I know I still won't recognise them!

The reason it might look like I'm showing off is because I'm holding a couple of wee trophies. That day was my last ever competition which ended well as I won a cup and had my photo in the "Evening News" too. (Now I really am bragging)!

I may have to talk nicely to someone in my IT dept to scan the photo. We'll see!

Right you lot, lets see if I can find any old friends from this photo. The date is 24th feb 1970 evening news, event - Girl guides landward swiming gala in Portobello baths. I was in the guides that met in St James Parish Church in Rosefield Place. Anybody recognise themselves? If anyone knows which one is me then I guess I've been bagged (Bob you can't play this one as you have inside info!) :D

I can see it but I don't recognise anybody. I was in the Guides at the Old Parish. Left after they took me camping and I had to go into a field of sheep (my biggest phobia) to put on a tap.
Think the Guide leaders name was Mrs Turbayne (or was she Brownies?) Her daughter's name was Hilary (hello, Hilary if you're here!!)

Can someone enlighten me as to why only some people can see my picture? Wangi, Alex, any thoughts? :?:

Hilary is not here. I think she now lives in the Borders and got married relatively recently. She was teaching at one of Edinburgh's posher Schools and playing in the Scottish National Orchestra too. Are you still in touch with her?

As I recall my Guide leader at St James was Irene Nicholson. Any one remember her? I think her parents still live in Portobello.

I think I remember her. Were they the Coal Merchants? I think they lived in Adelphi Place.

Aw! Now, that would be a good thread to start! "Who did you fancy at school?"
