BEST FISH AND CHIPS IN THE WORLD!
Literally.
Not a restaurant I know, but The World pub in Thistle Street does the most amazing fish and chips I've ever had. Better even imho than the Peacock at Newhaven.
We tried it first a few weeks ago and had lunch there again today wondering if it could be as good and it most definitely was.
The batter is so crisp and light and the chips are real home made beauties.
Great value too and handy for the number 42 back to Porty afterwards.
What more could you ask for?

Yes, why don't you go and do the dishes or something, even better get a life. Dont let it slip away trying to put a spanner in my works. I wondered when you were going t spot it?ecm wrote:Porty,

I think I'd better go on a 50 mile walk after last night.Alex wrote:The fish and chips in the restaurant at Abbey St Bathans is pretty damn fine - and the home made raspberry pavlova is even better.
Afterwards, you can go on a five mile round walk, taking in Eden's Hall broch.
Helps to get rid of any lingering guilt.
It also is one of the few pubs in Edinburgh does my absolutely favourite beer -ecm wrote:Not a restaurant I know, but The World pub in Thistle Street does the most amazing fish and chips I've ever had

The restaurant was called the 'Lake Sevan Armenian Monastery in Exile' if I remember correctly, and was run by one man. Did he not have an unexpectedly normal daytime job, as a lawyer or something? I remember being there once with a group of friends and he insisted on us singing along to an obscure tune that he then started playing, only for it to turn out to be 'Oh, No John, No John, No' or whatever the right title is! A strange place for the Queen's 'local', but an experience not to be missed. The restaurant had a long and bizarre title
Incidentally, one of the best restaurants in Edinburgh closed recently - Ciro's, up on the Pleasance. A tiny place with a big reputation. Sorely missed.
I read that - looked lovely - soup and dumplings!Sandra wrote:Chop Chop in Morrison Street got great write up in Metro this week - authentic chinese at really low prices.
It's hard to find authentic, but then a lot of it isn't for our western tastebuds!
We visited Chinatown in Boston and managed to find somewhere that wasnt just selling chop suey - we got lovely orange-glazed chicken and enormous bowls of soup.
The smoking ban will be a bit of a blow to some in the Chinese community here - although my clothes and eyes will benefit on my next pilgrimage to Szechuan House.
The Szechuan House
was wondering where that place had gone, I used to live in Leamington Terr. The restaurant was on the corner then moved to the hotel. Good to know it's still around.
If you like that place then try Jing Jiang on Henderson St, teeny wee place, menu in english and chinese, bring your own bottle. Similar to Szechuan House. Very busy at weekends so book.
They do amazing hot pots for two and those crispy rice dishes you used to get in szechuan House...
...must be nearly lunchtime!

Thanks for that Denise.
Did you know that Chinois at the Omni Centre has a special bit at the back that does hot pots?
To get admittance, you have to stop them before they show you to an all-you-can-eat seat, say you want hot pot, say yes, you're sure you want hot pot, then you get taken through.
It's an avalanche of food you get.
I take it you know where Szechuan House moved to? Just round the corner from the Cameo.
I used to live at the bottom of Leamington Terrace - opposite the car wash.

How was it?Dadaist wrote:I'm off out tonight to eat at, for the first time, "Ann Purna" (hope I got the name right) on St Patrick sq.
Has anyone been? I understand it's vegetarian Indian - is it like Kalpna?
I went with some friends last year before seeing some French hip-hop at the Festival Theatre. One of said friends is...er...how to put it... She has high standards and is quite posh, really, but also somewhat outspoken. She wanted to know how they got the starters such fantastic luminous colours. And she didn't like the wine. She told the chap serving us it was "rough as a badger's tadger". He poured her more, and asked how much he had to pour (as in, for free) to change her mind, and she said nothing would change her mind. He then called his mum over and told her what my friend had said about the wine; she smiled and said, "I'm afraid we don't know what a badger's tadger tastes like."

It was very different and very nice. I met both the mum and the son (and I think the dad and the grandson).
We had them falling about when we tried to pay with a 10 rupee note (one of our party was an offshore engineer who goes to India a lot)
Lots of small stuff. Chapatis were lovely. Beer also. Cheap. Cannae complain.

Locally, I have eaten at the Dalriada on several occasions, the food is good, the music is great, the staff are friendly, Terry and Alison are very good hosts.

Lastly The Drovers Inn, 5 Bridge Street, East Linton, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Tel: 01620 860293, is great for lunch or evening meals. They supply a free minibus which saves a bundle on taxi fares.

Think you will enjoy it, not been myself but heard lots of good reports. I shared a double bed with Gerry once in Moffat, we were almost total strangers. It was the night Los Angeles Raiders won the suprebowl in 1985(?)I reminded him about it recently at Living Well and he had forgotten!!! I was hurt.Portobellosite wrote:

Diner 7 in commercial street got a good write up in the ST yesterday and the Tijuana Yacht Club in Fredrick Street is another that I've been hearing good things about. Hard to beat the Parly for value tho, Sandra.
'suppose "Select" is bit classier than "Sizzlers" which has an echo of a BBQ! Also, there are several Sizzlers about.bearcub wrote:I see from an "advertisement feature" in the EN today that Sizzlers will be changing it's name shortly to.....drum roll please maestro........."Select"![]()
Not sure if I'm that keen on the new name, but never thought "Sizzlers" was that great either..........as long as the food's still good
Saw notice in Blue Bean re evening meals FRi & Sat - diff menu every week, open til 10 and BYOB.
