Back to the Postcard Gallery, which now has 845 images. I've just made a start on the final album, which contains 200+ postcards, mostly of the beach and promenade.

That leaves the Duddingston set, the Harry Lauder collection and anything else Margeorie discovers in the archives. And then I'm going to the pub.

Just added a couple of interesting photos of the Eastern Amateur Rowing Club from the 1950s.

Can you put names to faces? Check the pictures at:

The rowing club photos are all together in one album now at:

http://porty.org.uk/gallery4/thumbnails.php?album=36

We have been able to identify most of the people in the group photos but there are still a few unknowns. Please get in touch if you can help to identify the missing names.

I agree with you Granty, so much so, that I tried to 'Google' the artist to see if I could possibly afford one of his paintings, but can't find much info out there. Any chance of some more info Bob?

Thanks Bob , but the phrase 'if you have to ask the price then you probably can't afford it' springs to mind :D

Well, that's it. One thousand and thirty nine scans later I have finally completed Margeorie's collection of Portobello postcards, although as she is still adding to her collection it remains an ongoing project.

I am now working on her collection of postcards of Duddingston and its environs - around 150 or so cards in total.

After that, I'm going to tackle her Portobello-related 'paper ephemera' collection, which includes all sorts of things like letters, notes, receipts etc. I am also planning to scan several booklets and other bits and pieces.

Then I'm going to scan Margeorie's Sir Harry Lauder collection.

And finally, I'm going to go back and re-edit some of the earlier scans I'm not happy with.

Lindsay McCrea Gallery now added.

Still pursuing Mike Kinane and hoping to get some more pictures from Allan Pendreigh.

I recently discovered half a dozen Portobello postcards that Margeorie Mekie does not (as yet) have in her collection, including this novelty card dating from 1910. These cards are owned by Bill Thomson, who formerly ran the hardware store in Porty High Street, and are reproduced with his kind permission.

After a bit of a break to regain my sanity, it's back to scanning Margeorie's postcard collection. I have just added 24 pictures of Duddingston and plan to finish this album within the next week or two.

That's it - one thousand, one hundred and sixty nine scans and I think I might just have done the lot.

Except that, in the interim, Margeorie is likely to have added a few more to the collection. And then there's the Paper Ephemera collection. And the Sir Harry Lauder collection.

So, OK, it remains a work in progress BUT it's a milestone nonetheless. You know, I think I might just open a bottle of wine.

Recall this image from earlier in the thread?

Image

A cousin of George-Paul living in New York spotted it. She had lost touch with him over 20 years ago. I did a little detective work and traced him to California. They were delighted to find each other again and Paul has been exchanging email with my wife and catching up with long lost friends in Portobello as well.

His mum, who played the part of Margaret Swann in 28 episodes of Crossroads back in 1964, is still involved in theatre:

Meanwhile, popular local artist Evi Carmichael has added 13 new pictures to her gallery, all scenes in and around Portobello, including this one of Portobello High Street:

Just beginning to add a collection of images of Portobello Rowing Club. These include photos and regatta programmes dating from as early as 1919.

Also, coming soon:

Bob, I could probably get my hands on a couple of 'Towers' from the 70's if you need them to copy. 8)

Thanks for the offers. Epykat has already furnished me with copies of '76 and '77/78 and has promised to see what she can track down at the school. I have a huge backlog of stuff waiting to be scanned so hang on to those copies for now.

I have now added a few pages from the 1949 edition of The Tower, mainly advertisements for local businesses and a few photographs. There is an interesting piece on the history of the school, from a 1949 perspective, which I have re-typed and put up as a PDF.

I have also recently completed the Rowing Club albums. Interestingly, someone from North Berwick who saw these images was in touch with me recently. He hopes to revive competitive rowing in the Forth and sees Portobello as an ideal base.

..And I sometimes worked in the ice cream kiosk in the picture. It was owned by Mrs Webber's son. Mrs Webber was the sweetie shop owner near the foot of Bath Street. She was a legend. 8)

Two new additions to the Gallery. The first is a selection of work from local artist, Jemma K Derbyshire.
She specialises in painting, making bold, vivid works inspired by her upbringing in the raw, exposed landscape of the Scottish Highlands.

The second gallery highlights some of the work produced recently by the class she teaches at Portobello Community Centre.
