I think old houses have attics and new houses have lofts.

I say tea is between 4pm and 5-ish pm, and after 7pm it's dinner. But fights have broken out over less :D

And dinner ladies would have their own ideas. 8)

Interchangeable as far as I'm concerned.

kitchen / utility room vs. skullery?

Utility room is usually a small room given over to washing machine, dryer, dishwasher and other noisy white goods. Scullery is traditionally a room separate from the kitchen where dishwashing was done and kitchen implements stored.

lounge vs. living room vs. front room?

You live in the living room. Front room might be a room you kept for entertaining guests. If you called either of these rooms a 'lounge' you weren't very posh.

joiner vs. carpenter?

A carpenter would be expected to be more skilled and artistic than a joiner and charge accordingly.

tea vs. dinner

Tea happens around six (unless it's afternoon tea), dinner around eight.

dinner vs. lunch?

Lunch is the meal you have mid-day, dinner in the evening. To confuse the two is considered very bad form. I'm not sure how we explain school dinners.

I should add that we had a 'lounge' and frequently referred to lunch as dinner. We also had what we called a 'pantry', though it was really a walk-in cupboard that housed the crockery, odd bits of heirloom china and silverware and a dangerous assortment of old medicines.

Loft/attic: tenements seem to have attics never lofts. Modern blocks of 4/6 often have roof space instead of either!!

Lounge/etc: you forgot sitting room!

Re dinner: had a check on the internet because it's long puzzled me! So, "dinner" means the main meal of the day and at school it used to be the main meal of the day for working class children (only meal for the poorest, perhaps?).

BTW Congratulations wangi on a classic off topic swerve in just one post!!

Poor Epy - she's freezing in her loft/attic/roof space just now, but she'll be up there "glowing" in her undies when the hot weather arrives!!

You've just confirmed what I was going to say re. dinner Poppy. As a child we always had our main meal at "lunch time" but was called our dinner. My dad came home from work and we had our mince and tatties or whatever. We then had a lighter meal at night which was our "tea".

my grandmother used to refer to the front room as the parlour.
(See I may not be posh but came from stock that thought they were   )

My dad's mum had the "big" house in their stair up the South side.
Most of them were "single ends", hers had an indoor, unshared lavvy, also a freezing cold "parlour "that was used on high days and holidays, otherwise the fire was never lit in that room.
The main living area was the kitchen, with a range cooker which always seemed to be on , sink, coal cupboard, big sideboard armchairs, and they had a bed in there ,

Had a bit of 'Spring cleaning fever'
My work area now looks much better (I hope).
Here's the new improved computer area (still under the stairs though for the time being).

Just been watching your beloved Johnny Depp on D.V.D. Pirates of the Carribean/ Dead Man's Chest!!! ( with subtitles of course!!)
Good film, but don't think it was as good as the first one. Bit of a weird ending, does that mean there's going to be another one??

They should film it here. I can just see the ship anchored on the other side of the golden balls, and Mr Depp being entertained in the Dalriada between takes 8)
