Litter Bins on the Prom

Post by Susan » 03 Aug 2003, 22:13

Hi,

I know there has been a few comments about the litter bins on the Prom overflowing.

I was fascinated to see one of the local residents stuffing a bag of household rubbish into a litter bin today. I don't understand why anyone has to work so hard at pushing their household rubbish into one of these bins when there is a big black bin just up Bath Street which has been placed to allow people to dispose of their household rubbish whenever they please!

It should also be noted that the bins marked Trade Waste (usually white)are paid for by the business premises and should not be used for household rubbish.
It is illegal for businesses to use the bins provided for domestic waste, so placing domestic waste into a trade waste bin creates problems for the disposal of commercial waste.

They call this practice 'granny bagging'. It's a real nuisance because it is not what these bins are designed for and it means that they fill up more quickly. I know that before the introduction of wheelie bins some people liked to dispose of things like chicken carcasses in this way to stop cats from ripping open the bin liners, but there really is no excuse now for it. By the same token, why on earth do people dump rubbish when all they have to do is pick up the phone and organise (free of charge) a special uplift?

On the same subject, I'm sure you must have noticed the problem with the trade waste bin at the foot of Bath Street in recent weeks. Not a very nice introduction to the prom/beach!

Litter Bins

Hi,

If it were a "Granny" I would never have mentioned it!

It was someone that was perfectly capable of using the proper facilities!

Where's the Beach Cleaning Equipment?

Post by kevin » 07 Aug 2003, 15:14

:x
It's good news that the new beach cleaning equipment is working well However what's been done about the overflowing rubbish bins on the prom.
Many locals have said to me that they are ashamed at the overflowing bins and bags of rubbish piled alongside these bins.
Surely the council staff who empty the bins could patrol the area more often and do this task when the weather is warm and the Promenade busy.
We may be attracting many first time visitors to Portobello, but frankly would you come back to a dirty prom.

If the Prom is kept clean this will result in less rubbish going on the beach.Yes it's as simple as that but what's been done about it.

Has anyone ever seen a bin being emptied?
Has anyone seen a environmental warden walking along the prom yet?
Has anyone seen any of the Promenade businesses out helping to keep overflowing bins under control?

Until these items are addressed the Beach and promenade will never come up to standard and visitors including locals will simply go elsewhere.

Let's hope something is done soon especially with fine weather forecast for a faoir while yet.

Until these
Kevin.

I think I've made my point several times on the issue of litter on the Prom so I won't repeat myself. However, I have now made an official complaint about the trade bin outside The Old Pier pub. I understand that there have been problems in emptying it because of the restricted access at the foot of Bath Street but this is simply not good enough. Bath Street is the major access route to the Prom and the beach, used by thousands of people at this time of year. It is bad enough that they have to walk past a building site, but to have to squeeze past a smelly, fly and wasp infested, over-flowing bin is surely not the welcome that we would wish to extend to visitors to the area. It has been like this for weeks now and no-one seems to care. As the Old Pier is the hub of the Portobello Open Door 'Big Beach Bash' activities over the next week or so, it is surely in everyone's interest to do something about this unsightly and unhygenic mess.

Bin

The white bin at the Foot of Bath Street, (which has nothing to do with the Beach Cleaners) should be moved up next to the black wheely bin. It should never have been put beside the Pillar Box - which is now, also used as a rubbish bin.

I last posted a birthday card there in June and was told the envelope arrived with oily/greasy circles on it. I didn't understand that until I noticed the letter box being emptied once when I was walking past. I saw the Postman extracting the mail from the rubbish inside. He was wiping bits of sausage roll and pastry from the envelopes. He cleared the rest of the rubbish out, locked the Pillarbox (!) and drove off. It's a bad idea having an over-flowing bin next to a Pillar Box.

People don't show much respect for the mail nowadays. I don't think beach visitors from a hundred years ago would have stuffed pies and sausage rolls into the Pillar Box.

I had come back to say that other Promenade walkers and neighbours, especially older ladies (people you wouldn't think would be interested in a SurfRaker Beach Cleaning Machine) are having little chats about it. The Lunch Club's are buzzing! They're saying how smart the tractor and machine look when they're going along together and how clean and fluffy the beach looks. I suppose it does look a bit like a newly hoovered carpet. So it's a pity that a small white smelly bin has over-ruled the conversation.

I appreciate the efforts that council staff are making to keep the area clean,However the Council and indeed Councilors should be doing their bit to boost staff numbers at the busiest time of the year.

If the public visibly see people making an effort to keep the area clean then they might think twice of dropping litter or maybe walk a little further to find a bin that is not as full.

I also suggest that the promenade would benefit from some larger bins, the type being used outside tenements. These would be useful near the car parks etc .

I just find this matter very frustrating particularly when the council are encouraging people to be responsible for their litter, they could do their bit by emptying bins regularly.

I recently received the following communication from Lawrence Marshall, which will be of great interest to everyone who has voiced concern about the cleanliness of the beach and promenade on this forum. It's nice to know that people are listening, and more importantly, taking action.
Councillors

Recognising the popularity of Portobello in normal conditions this fabulous weather has made Portobello an even more popular place and this short note is to let you know that I recognise that the normal staffing for the cleansing of Portobello is not sufficient at this time. I have therefore, for most of this week and certainly for Saturday and Sunday, (indeed until this weather changes) additional resources and manpower have been allocated to Portobello this includes staff working on the beach and two barrow beats on the promenade. In addition an increased programme of litter bin emptying has been introduced.

I sincerely hope that this extra resource results in a environment suitable for the venue and the weather.

Mike Drewry

Excellent news indeed and this will hopefully become the standard during periods of good weather.
