"He ain't heavy" reminds me of my mother's fiftieth birthday party so it must have charted the second time round about then. 1988? (Did someone say that already?... I'm not very good at paying attention due to all the food, alcohol, paracetamol and sudafed I've been consuming copiously...)

A song that makes me cry is "For a friend" by the Communards. It makes me think of my best friend Geoff who died when I was 25 and he was 27.

Mention of 'The Housemartins' reminded me of the birth of my only offspring.
As per instructions from our ante natal classes we chose a CD to take along to play during labour. At the time there was a TV ad (for what, I don't remember ) which used a track from the album 'Sacred Spirit: Chants And Dances Of The Native Americans'. I liked the track so thought that might be the nice, soothing sort of thing to play as my son entered the world. Wrong!
As labour went on...... and on .....and on, I grew more and more irritated with the CD.

Eventually, it was agreed that my baby was not going to enter the world through his own accord and I was taken into the theatre for a caesarean. The staff swung into action and did their best to keep me calm. They had a sound system in the theatre and asked if there was anything we wanted played. Homer suggested the CD we had brought which raised howls of derision from the staff and a plea for mercy from me. After much argument between the staff someone put on 'The Beautiful South' and 'Carry On up the Charts' (it was either that or something with the sounds of dolphins), which then started to skip and repeat.
My son, therefore, entered this world not to a beautiful, soothing soundtrack, but to the sound of his mother swearing loudly at a CD player.

I have never, ever, ever listened to 'Sacred Spirit' since and whenever I hear 'The Beautiful South' it makes my eyes water

An absolute classic, M. One of my all time favourites. I think it was the Alexander Brother's version that haunted my childhood.

There was also a great version by the Travelling Wilburys after George Harrison suggested they cover it.

It's one of life's genuine delights to hear Bob Dylan croaking through a verse or two. Magic!

PS anyone hear Bob's Theme Time Radio Shows which have been aired on Radio 2 over the holiday? Excellent stuff.

Tonight's show's theme is "Coffee". 7.00 pm
