Meant my earlier post in refrence to the hot milk not CAKE DAY. (Cant get hang of quotes yet)
Thanks for tips on feeding cakes. My ma in law makes a brill moist fruit cake but as she's been unwell thought I'd try so's we've got one for Xmas, but don't want to ask her at present as she may feel I'm stepping on her toes and she's got enough stress.

and they do great soup as well as fantastic home baking. Dadaist, Epykat will be droolingDadaist wrote:My dad used to take us to Clarinda's tea room when we were small - it's not changed. Their home baking is fantastic - from rock buns to crumbles.
They do Viennese coffee, and hot milk with honey & nutmeg.
Urghhhhhh! When I'm drinking a milky drink, if a skin (even a tiny one) forms, I get the heeby-jeebies if it touches my lips.teddygirl wrote:I love hot milk, especially the skin that forms if you leave it for a while![]()
My Mum, Dad and sister used to fight over the rice pudding skin - I was quite happy to surrender my turn.........
Wow, half way through cake day and I think I need to check in. The story so far.
Breakfast - pain au chocolat
Elevenses - off for the morning to Museum of Modern Art. I lined up chocolate fudge brownie, banoffee pie and this huge slab of choclately stuff with a chocolate topping. Pot of tea for me, and what the heck, Irn-Bru for the boys.
We all got stuck in filling our faces with the gooey delights. The boys topped up with fizzy pop and we smiled at each other glassy eyed.
No sooner had we taken our last mouthful and we were getting a rush. My memory gets hazy but at one point I was holding on to the table singing Billy Joel "Innocent Man".
We were high and ready for anything. We tried to get into the Mapplethorpe exhibition. In the queue I knew we had to straighten up and we tried to hold ourselves together through the giggles. I paid the money and started to go in. At this point I could hear condemning comments from others around. "poor children", "it's disgusting they're obviously cake junkies" etc.
It was a kindly attendant that helped me out. I wasn't familiar with his work and he pointed out the explicit material I'd be subjecting my children to and quietly led us away.
We went to the car and we started to argue and bicker. the youngest was in tears.
I knew we were coming down. I had to find a safe place for us to level out.
Fortunately granny lives nearby. We holed up and she lovingly fed us soup and bacon rolls. I got tired and fell asleep on the sofa. When I woke up I was fine, as were the children, though I felt a little ashamed and embarrassed.
Why didn't someone warn me not to eat cake on an empty stomach?
Anyway tonight I'll only have a slither of birthday cake after I've eaten and that's it.

Managed to polish off (insert Dervla Kirwan voice over) Blueberry Tart with custard, not just any blueberry's etc. etc and chocolate pud with cream. Feeling a bit full.

Damn - I have been away and didn't realise it was cake day. Have you tried making this?
At only 1250 calories and the equivalent of 22 teaspoons of fat per slice, it looks healthy as well as delicious.
Oh no - I've just looked down and my lap is covered in drool.

I think it is Dervla, a hint of Irish accent in there. I must say that in some of the adverts I think the food looks yuk.foxy wrote:Is that Dervla Kirwan? All this talk about cakes put me in the mood to make a chocolate cake
I spent most off the day doing this just went to get a bit and all that is left is the crumbs on the plate
Kids came home from school with two pals hubby home from work and between them all ate it and I never even got a taste
Next time I will hide it
