1. This is set much later than WW2, but has some interesting parallels. The character in question is a holocaust survivor.

Yes. Everything about that programme used to scare the c**p out of me as a kid - the theme music, blindness, deserted cities, those whip-like stings the triffids had - and then just for good measure Wyndham kills off all the blind people with a painful disease. Nasty.
