Bill Paterson could improve any part in a drama or comedy. He is probably Scotland's best actor. He might make Rebus work, but the books are so bad and the TV productions so awful I doubt anything could improve them.

Christopher Brookmyre is a much better writer ... but his work needs to be filmed with good actors.

James Nesbitt was in Quite Ugly One Morning, though I don't know what it was like 'cause I was out. ( I still surprise myself that I don't try to record things when I go out :? )

Was not up to much so you didn't miss much - James Nesbitt was totally wrong for the part. And I guess it's difficult to film the flavour of Brookmyre's writing. Although I'd love to see the one set on the oil rig in the Moray Firth on film!

I agree, I'd like to see the ouward bounds paintballing one filmed. I wander whether Brookmyre writes with one eye on the film potential? Particularly the big explosion scene in the hydro-electric underground hingmy - sometimes takes away from the book a bit me feels.

I saw Ian Rankin say that he doesn't really have anyone in mind with Rebus , though he thought John Hannah was wrong. I seem to remember him saying Brian Cox would be about the closest 'fit' to what he'd imagined.

Brian Cox wouldn't touch Rebus with rubber gloves cleaned in Domestos!

Too bad if he does as it's not worked for him much so far!!
the hydro-electric underground hingmy
Plug and I have visited that place (Cruachan (sp?)) - and the scale of it makes Brookie's story seem more believable. The security is pretty tight which is also quite a thrill!!

(There is a bench there dedicated to a resident of Portobello)

Plug and I went to see Brookmyre and Rankin in conversation at the Queen's Hall - seem good buddies and work well as a team.

Me to, I thought they were good fun. Though when Rankin talked about his routine of getting up and writing 5 pages a day or whatever, somehow it took the romance out of it abit and Rebus seemed a bit of a money making business. Brookmyre strikes me as having a bit more va va vroom!
I have a silly notion of an author working day and night on a big idea then finishing up with a big cigar, bottle of whiskey and a months sleep.
